As the July 4th holiday approaches, the Santa Barbara Fire Department would like to remind everyone that ALL types of fireworks are illegal in the City of Santa Barbara. This includes so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which may not be used in Santa Barbara EVEN IF they are legal in the city in which they are purchased. Possession of fireworks is considered a misdemeanor and may be punishable up to $1,000.00 fine, and or 6 months in jail.

With COVID-19 protective measures in place most official fireworks events have not been scheduled this year. Please check local news outlets for updates and information about other activities related to July 4th.

City of Santa Barbara Fire Code 5601.1.3 Fireworks, SB City Municipal Code Section 8.04.020 STATE: All fireworks shall be illegal in the City of Santa Barbara including California State Fire Marshal “Safe and Sane” fireworks. No person shall possess, transport, sell or offer for sale any such fireworks.

Fireworks fire & injury facts

Fireworks started an estimated 19,500 fires in 2018, including 1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires. These fires caused five deaths, 46 civilian injuries, and $105 million in direct property damage.

In 2018, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 9,100 people for fireworks related injuries; half of those injuries were to the extremities and 34% were to the eye or other parts of the head. Children younger than 15 years of age accounted for more than one-third (36%) of the estimated 2018 injuries. These injury estimates were obtained or derived from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2018 Fireworks Annual Report by Yongling Tu and Jason Ng.

  1. Our jerks of the neighborhood neighbors’ kids set something off about a week ago. Our washing machine was on and when I heard a super loud fizzing, whooshing noise, I thought the machine was blowing a gasket or something. (Did you know your washing machine is considered “The Apex Predator” of your appliances?) Anyway, there soon followed a nasty rush of fireworks’ smoke through our open side door, so I knew it was the brats next door had set something off. Parents were home, too. At least we’re rid of the jackass who lived on the block behind ours. He and his family had every neighbor trying to talk with them about their annual 4th of July “celebrations.” Sometimes neighbors would call the police. The police would leave, the fireworks would start up again. Those moronic “we’re so special” asshats would set off fireworks over and over and over, every 4th. Genuine certified, conservative, flag-waving “We’re so PATRIOTIC” nutcases. Glad they finally moved and took their patriotic, inconsiderate and dangerous idiocy with them.

  2. Maybe you should invite yourself over next time and sit back and enjoy them, unless you’re just too busy getting hammered & hating the US patriotism. Of course, alcohol is legal and doesn’t harm anybody…

  3. I’m on your side, 1:43. Setting off fireworks when they are illegal and in one of the most fire-prone areas of the country is just plain stupid (to say nothing of being inconsiderate of your neighbors). There is nothing truly patriotic about fireworks at all.

  4. Seems to be a specific type that’s a burden to entire neighborhoods and behave badly wherever they go. They want the perks of social living and the freedoms of living on distant acreage from civilization. They’re fine where they can’t hurt others, cockroaches in civil society.

  5. You should come to Lompoc if you want to hear/see illegal fireworks. They sell these ‘safe and sane’ fireworks and then tell people you can use them only for a few hours on the 4th of July. Oh sure. Illegal aerial fireworks go off throughout the year. These scofflaws wrap themselves with the flag and boast that they are patriots celebrating. No. These people are thoughtless jerks who ruin this community. And our City Council does nothing…..more thoughtless jerks. The fire chief and members of the public have asked the city council to end these fireworks sales and crack down on the illegal aerial displays….but no. Mosby and his cronies cry ‘Freedom’ and our city continues to go down the tubes.

  6. Forget about the noise . It is only my opinion, but to me, prospect of those sulphur smelling, extra smokey, aren’t really extinguished, aren’t very impressive, and are very expensive “safe&sane” fireworks are not worth the very real risk of fire. We sort of have enough on our plates without adding to the burden, just because we want to burn stuff. How about a nice BBQ and some homemade ice cream instead.

  7. I’m so sick of the loud bangs! It’s not “patriotic” it’s irresponsible and it sounds like a warzone. It’s horrible for pets and wildlife and small children. Wish these pyros would just stop. In our high-danger fire zone, this is so so irresponsible and stupid. Wish the police would crack down on it harder. It’s a hazard and a disturbance. Leave it to the professionals for 4th of July… we don’t need illegal fireworks every damned night.
