It is indeed legal to camp anywhere in SB! We took guests on Saturday to see the fig tree by the train station, and there were homeless people all over the tree roots, especially inside the chained area.
We reported it to the police, and they told us they’re not breaking up encampments during Covid.
MICHIGANGAL – you’re surprised there were homeless people living among the roots of the fig tree? Um….. they’ve been there since I was a kid in the 70s. Why would you call the cops on the homeless people just trying to live? No, it’s NOT “legal to camp anywhere in SB,” it’s just a pretty low priority and homeless folks aren’t the best at paying their citations, so the cops leave them be unless they’re doing something more criminal than trying to sleep.
Gee I wonder how that could have started?! But it’s fine to illegally camp, start fires, litter and defecate in public spaces in Santa Barbara County.
