Film: D’Art Santa Barbara

By Larry Nimmer

D’Art Santa Barbara, Larry Nimmer’s new film, has been chosen as an Award Winner at the American Filmmatic Arts Awards in Brooklyn, New York on February 9, 2020.

D’Art uses the randomness of the dart to approach its art subject matter.  Along the way, the program takes various unexpected twists and turns.

D’Art Santa Barbara is the premiere episode in the series. The episode starts with Nimmer throwing a dart at the map of the Santa Barbara Open Studio Tour.  The art studio closest to where the dart lands determines the first artist featured.  At the artist’s studio, Nimmer interviews the artist about their work and influences.  Randomness continues as, for example, the artist spins a brush to determine which piece to talk about.  Unexpected discoveries happen at “left turns” into short features on the influencing artists.  The featured artist then throws the dart and sends Nimmer’s camera off to the next studio.

Seven artists are featured in the Santa Barbara episode are Karen Aggeler, Danuta Bennett, Stephen Robeck, Rob Robinson, Rick Garcia, Cathy Quiel and Larry R. Rankin.  Each artist’s segment is 10 – 15 minutes in length.

Larry Nimmer is an Emmy nominated filmmaker as well as a conceptual artist, based in Carpinteria, California.

Nimmer is currently working on another series, D’Art Museum.   The initial episode involves a train trip from Los Angeles to Boston, and uses the dart to randomly explore artists in museums, from one end of the country to the other.
