Relationship and intimacy expert Esther Perel will give a lecture to help understand the intricacies of love and desire on December 4.
As a renowned couples psychotherapist, Perel believes the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. Fluent in nine languages, she helms a therapy practice in New York City and serves as an organizational consultant for Fortune 500 companies all over the world.
Since arriving as a graduate student in the United States, Perel has examined the complexities of love from a myriad of angles: the nature of cultural and religious identity, the negotiation between tradition and modernity, the ebb and flow between individualism and collectivism.
Perel is the New York Times bestselling author of Mating in Captivity: Reconciling the Erotic and the Domestic and The State of Affairs: Rethinking Infidelity. Her celebrated TED Talks have garnered more than 20 million views.
Her podcast, Where Should We Begin?, brings listeners inside her private couples counseling sessions with real-life couples. It’s unlocked a deep-seated cultural interest in hashing these issues out openly in order to live better lives. It’s also helped Perel understand that her years of study and practice go beyond the romantic and that the lessons she’s learned can be applied to relationships of all kinds, in all environments. The same principles used to create an open balanced relationship with one’s significant other, can be applied to co-workers, bosses, and the world at large.
“I enjoy exploring the complexity of human connection in simple ways. My goal is to help people all over the world feel understood and less alone – to confront their pain and provide tools and motivation for change,” said Perel.
Through her international work on erotic intelligence, trauma, sexual honesty and conflict resolution, Perel invites a more nuanced conversation about our transgressions and provides a daring framework for understanding the intricacies of love and desire.
She will speak at the Granada Theatre on December 4 at 7:30 p.m. on behalf of UCSB Arts & Lectures and presented through the generosity of Diana & Simon Raab.
