The No. 2 (right lane) of Northbound US 101 at the Olive Mill Road Overcrossing has reopened ahead of schedule, on the afternoon of Friday, December 22, 2023. The lane closure went into effect Wednesday afternoon, December 20, due to safety concerns after a large pothole started to develop. The inundation of rain in the area made it infeasible for crews to make necessary highway repairs and secure a patch of asphalt. Thankfully, those issues have since been resolved.

In addition to the pavement repairs, crews are making drainage modifications and replacing, repairing and/or clearing out infrastructure systems for added protection this winter. Due to the holiday traffic, crews are also working on reopening the northbound San Ysidro offramp before Christmas day. This will be the first time in months the offramp will be open.

We express our gratitude to our dedicated construction and maintenance personnel who remain on call around the clock during storm events. Their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in conducting repairs contribute significantly to ensuring the safety of our community.

In response to heavy rainfall impacting the Central Coast, Caltrans crews are actively engaged in emergency road repairs in Santa Barbara County. The No. 2 (right lane) of Northbound US 101 at the Olive Mill Road Overcrossing is temporarily closed to ensure safety, pending further attempts to repair the pavement in drier conditions and crews are working diligently to clear out drains impacting the area.

Wet conditions will not allow for the placement of a secure patch of asphalt and the lane will remain closed until the current storm system passes. While reopening the No. 2 (right lane) of Northbound US 101 at the Olive Mill Road Overcrossing is subject to weather conditions, the lane closure is expected to last into the evening of Friday, December 22, 2023. The closure of the No. 2 lane began Wednesday, December 21, 2023. We will update the community and media when the lane is able to be reopened.

To monitor traveler speeds and enhance safety, the California Highway Patrol is on-site. Due to the velocity of the rainfall in the area, CHP closed the No. 1 lane at the Olive Mill Road Overcrossing briefly on Thursday, December 21, 2023 and has since reopened it. For those passing through the area, we urge you to exercise caution and reduce speed in work zones for the safety of all involved.

Caltrans has closed the number two (right) lane of northbound Highway 101at the Olive Mill Road overcrossing to perform emergency highway repairs.

Crews are continuing to perform repairs on the pavement beneath the overcrossing in Montecito.

“The heavy rain will not allow for placement of a secure patch of asphalt. Further attempts will occur this evening when the storm passes,” Caltrans states.

The No. 2 northbound lane remains closed until the current storm system passes as the success of repairs are weather dependent as the wet conditions are challenging to apply new asphalt.
