Emergency Responders Perform CPR and Administer Narcan to Save a Life

Source: Santa Barbara Police Department

On Thursday, May 23, 2019 at approximately 7:15 P.M., Santa Barbara Police Officers were dispatched to a medical emergency in the 500 Block of West Alamar Avenue. Reporting parties called 911 and said a male was inside a vehicle, hunched over and appeared to not be breathing.

Upon arrival the Officer and a bystander removed the unconscious male from the vehicle. The Officer immediately began emergency first aid and discovered the unconscious male had no pulse and was not breathing. A second Santa Barbara Police Officer arrived on scene and the two Officers worked in tandem to provide chest compressions and breathe technique with the aid of a CPR mask.

During CPR, a faint pulse returned and the male began labored breathing. However, he was still in a state distress. Officers continued to provide emergency medical aid until Santa Barbara Fire Department Firefighters arrived on scene and administered Narcan, a nasal spray that is used in an emergency situation, which reverses the effect of a narcotic. The Narcan administration was successful in fully reviving the victim who had been suffering from an apparent opiate overdose.

Because of the swift action by the public safety professionals, the man’s life was saved.

  1. So glad that he was able to be brought back, I’m surprised that the SBPD is not carrying Narcan and had to wait for the Fire Dept to arrive. The SBSO carries it and has had several “success” stories from administering the antidote.
