Emergency Repairs for Turnpike Exit Sinkhole

Source: Caltrans

The southbound US Highway 101 on-ramp at Turnpike Road remains closed due to a sinkhole located between the on-ramp and the right shoulder of the southbound lanes. This sinkhole was discovered on Dec. 27, followed by the closure of the on-ramp to maintain public safety.  Caltrans and the contractor immediately began developing a repair strategy.

Caltrans will begin excavation work under an emergency contract today, Friday, Jan. 10 with construction planned seven days a week from 6 am until 5 pm.  Construction activities will include replacing the entire length of deteriorated corrugated steel pipe at depths of up to 40 below the surface.  It is anticipated this ramp will re-open the week of Feb. 3, weather permitting.

Motorists headed southbound may enter US 101 at South Patterson Avenue or State Street and can expect delays not to exceed 10 minutes.

The contractor for this $1 million project is Granite Construction of Santa Barbara, CA.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.

  1. While this closure is occurring, maybe someone could go out and clear the fence area on the Caltrans easement of the homeless laundry and sleeping bags, etc. There is a large encampment right there so it would be a good time to clean that out. They are using the fence to dry out their belongings so they are obviously living in plain sight.

  2. Back in the ol’ day we just rode up on our horses, gave um water and got to work! We’d camp, get paid and head to the saloon! None of this driving home bull puckie! We’d start fresh everyday! Now these kids just ride in and take hours to set up then hours to leave each day. We were tough!

  3. Be prepared for a lane closure at rush hour, instead of doing it during the overnight hours when their is less traffic. I’m sure the spotlights to do that job will exceed their budget.
