A longtime resident of Santa Barbara and great-grandfather died last month after being hit by a truck while walking home from a grocery store.
Bonifacio Sixto Carachure, 80, was on his usual walk from the Smart & Final grocery store on December 7, 2023, when the driver of a pickup truck struck him at the intersection of Garden and Cota Streets.
He was one block away from home.
Carachure was transferred to the hospital where he began receiving treatment for several broken bones and internal bleeding. He then developed an aggressive form of pneumonia. His family stated that after a slow and agonizing 10 days in the hospital, he passed away with loved ones by his side.
The father of nine, grandfather of 29, great-grandfather of eight, and husband of 63 years, was born in Guerrero, Mexico in 1943. He worked in construction where he participated in building the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, home to the country’s national football team.
Carachure immigrated to the United States in the 1980s and later became an American citizen working as a gardener. “He preached honesty, righteousness, and respect by example. He promoted peace, love, and kindness in his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren,” his family wrote. He found peace in walking, loved the rain, and was very passionate about soccer.
Family members have created a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are unknown but the family is asking if anyone has information regarding the collision that occurred at the Garden and Cota Streets intersection on December 7 between 11 am and 2 pm to contact them.
A rosary, funeral service, and burial took place this week. The family has also installed a cross at the intersection of Garden and Cota Streets, across from Art from Scrap, to memorialize Carachure.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
My condolences to Boni Jr. and the entire family.
