New reports claim the driver who died in this collision attempted to pass vehicles occupying both lanes by driving into the center median.
All drivers were in the southbound lanes when the passing vehicle clipped one of the southbound vehicles and crossed into oncoming traffic, reports KEYT.
The passing vehicle then collided head-on with a white SUV in the northbound lane. The passing vehicle then went off the road where it caught fire, killing the driver. Their identity has not been released.
The driver of the white SUV, an elderly woman, was taken to the hospital with major injuries. There were no other injuries in the third vehicle involved.

One person was pronounced dead on the scene of a multi-vehicle head-on collision on Highway 1 Friday morning.
At 11:13 a.m., Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to Highway 1 and Constellation Road in Lompoc in the Vandenberg Village area. They found three vehicles to be involved in a head-on collision where one vehicle went over the side of the road and caught fire, reports Public Information Officer Daniel Bertucelli.
Crews on the scene confirmed one fatality and another patient in critical condition who required major extrication from their vehicle. That patient was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by a Calstar helicopter.
Fire crews remained on scene to clean up the area and law enforcement is investigating the cause of the collision.
Poor woman, through no fault of her own, badly injured when she was simply headed down the road. Hope her injuries can be healed without lasting problems. But, as we get older it takes a toll on our ability to overcome injuries.
Someone passed me on this road yesterday and he had to be going 100 mph. Not exaggerating. I was going 65, the speed limit. It was a black BMW and he got off on Santa Lucia Road.
Too many speed demons on that stretch of road. Your life isn’t worth getting to Lompoc 5 min sooner. Poor woman, I hope she fully recovers. I travel that a lot for work. I keep it at 59mph max, and I don’t care how many impatient people back up behind me.
From 101 to Lompoc it’s 55mph the whole way. Prime speeding ticket hunting grounds. It guess it’s higher on the north side of town.
Someone driving the median? Is that true? Yikes.
