Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a vandalism that occurred in Los Alamos and are asking the public for assistance.
On Thursday, October 12, 2023, at approximately 10:42 a.m., deputies responded to the 700-block of Shaw Street in Los Alamos to investigate a report of vandalism.
When deputies arrived, they observed text and a drawing spray painted in the roadway with silver colored paint. The text and drawing consisted of offensive material; therefore, the exact sentiment has been intentionally omitted from publication.
Deputies canvassed the area and are continuing to follow up on this case.
Deputies encourage anyone with information that would assist in identifying the person(s) who committed this vandalism to please contact Deputy Oropeza in the Santa Maria Sheriff’s Office at (805)934-6150. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can provide information by calling our tip line at (805)681-4171 or SBSheriff.org.
How is anyone supposed to help if they won’t say what it was? Was it sexual? Racist? What? Are we really that sensitive that they can’t even tell us? Heck, I know plenty of people with silver paint…. should I send their names? LOL come on cops.
I assume it’s something hateful and antisemitic. If that’s the case, I applaud the sheriff’s office for not sharing the message and stoking the flames right now.
My point is, why ask for assistance if they won’t tell us what it was? That kind of info helps narrow down suspects. Either way, really hoping it was not anti-Semitic or anti-Palestinian. We have too much hate going on over there as it is. Too many innocents have died and are dying by the hour. Hate is only fueling each side. Everyone has a right to exist without fear of attacks, whether by words or bombs.
I think the hope is that this is used as a teaching moment for discussion. It was probably something done just for attention without fully realizing the historical pain and implications. It is more than just finding out who did it and punishing them. The community needs to be educated whether it is at school or at home. There is a lot going on in the world right now.
