At 6:30 a.m. yesterday, deputies responded to a 911-Follow up in the 200-block of Winchester Canyon Road. A resident in the area called to report a green Ford Expedition in the roadway, resting on the driver’s side. It appeared to have driven up the right roadway embankment and then rolled down on its side. Units arrived on scene and located the empty vehicle. While deputies were checking the area for evidence, they found a deceased male subject 100 feet down a cliff side, in a creek. The creek is about 20 feet west of where the vehicle was located.
An additional witness reported talking with a subject near the vehicle in the early morning hours after the crash occurred. The subject told the witness that he was attempting to get his vehicle back on its wheels. The witness suggested that subject call for a tow truck. The subject also told the witness that he was in the area visiting family and was looking for a place to camp.
Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue volunteers responded to the scene and used a technical rope system to raise the deceased subject up the side of a cliff to the roadway. Coroner’s detectives have identified the decedent as 36-year-old Michael Currier of Long Beach. Detectives do not suspect foul play.
A number of you point out the oddness of his final moments and the suspicioun of not being in a sober frame of mind. A quick search of his name reveals quite a troubled life, including drugs.
I wonder if he was under the influence of something? Seeing something like a vehicle in its side with a person trying to upright it should probably warrant a call to 911 if witnessed… could have saved his life and also others, if in fact they were. Why else would they not want to call a tow truck?
