Update by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office
The Coroner’s Bureau is releasing the ID of the decedent from Stearns Wharf on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.
Decedent is 20-year-old John Venters III of Santa Barbara. Cause and manner of death are pending.
Update by the Santa Barbara Police Department
On September 6, 2023, at 11:47 a.m., the Santa Barbara Police Department Combined Communications Center received a report of an unresponsive adult male in the restrooms near the base of Stearns Wharf.
Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol, Santa Barbara Police Officers, and Santa Barbara Fire Department responded to the scene.
Once on scene, first responders conducted lifesaving medical aid, and Narcan was administered in an attempt to revive the male. Tragically, the subject was declared dead on scene.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Coroner responded to investigate further. The name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification to next of kin. No foul play is suspected at this time.

A man was found unconscious inside the restrooms at the base of Stearns Wharf today at 12:17 p.m. by a passerby. The Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol, police, fire and AMR all responded.
CPR was performed for 20 minutes before the man was declared deceased. The cause is not known.
