Construction Update: January 21 – February 3

Spotlight: In the Padaro segment, crews are continuing work on concrete roadways, drainage improvements, and sound walls for the northbound lanes. Crews will begin grinding roadway surfaces. Please expect night noise. In Summerland, crews will grind pavement on the Ortega Hill Bikeway. Please expect night noise. In Montecito, crews are working in the median on drainage improvements and temporary shoring installation to prepare the improvement areas. Demolition and temporary shoring will also begin at Romero and Oak Creek Bridges. Please expect trucks hauling material at night and day/night noise. At the San Ysidro Roundabout, landscaping has begun. At the Olive Mill Roundabout, crews are finishing up landscaping.

Closures (weather permitting)
Please drive safely through the corridor and remember to Slow for the Cone Zone. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph for safety throughout the construction areas. Two freeway lanes remain open in each direction during daytime hours. Please expect day and night work.

Northbound Highway 101

  • Sunday nights, 9:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane: Carpinteria Ave to Hermosillo Rd
  • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane: Carpinteria Ave to Hermosillo Rd
  • Daytime closures: on-ramp at S Padaro/Santa Claus Ln, Jan. 23 – 25, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
  • On-ramp at San Ysidro Rd, closed until early 2025 (for roundabout and highway work), drivers can use the northbound on-ramp at Sheffield Dr

Southbound Highway 101

  • Sunday nights, 10:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane: Cabrillo Blvd to Carpinteria Ave
  • On-ramp at Posilipo Rd, Jan. 28
  • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane: Cabrillo Blvd to Carpinteria Ave
  • On-ramp at Posilipo Rd, Jan. 29 – Feb 1

Ortega Hill Bikeway and northbound on-ramp at Ortega Hill Rd

  • Jan 24 – 26, 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, Flaggers will direct bike traffic as needed as crews grind the surface of the bikeway and then re-stripe lanes. The northbound on-ramp at Ortega Hill Rd will be closed as needed to accommodate work during this time. Please expect night noise during this work.

Upcoming Closure

  • Southbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd – As early as Feb. 11 (please note schedule change), the ramp will close for construction. Drivers will be able to use the off-ramp at Sheffield Dr as a detour. Work at this ramp is being advanced in the schedule to better coordinate with the upcoming construction of the Santa Barbara segment and avoid consecutive long-term ramp closures in the same direction.

Please note: consecutive ramps in the same direction will not be closed at the same time (unless where noted) to allow drivers to use a ramp before or after a closure. To view timelines, detours, and maps, please visit www.SBROADS.com and select the project segment.

Highway 101: Montecito
The Montecito segment is located between Sheffield Dr and Olive Mill Rd. The Highway 101 improvements are underway on the San Ysidro Overcrossing in conjunction with the San Ysidro Roundabout.

  • Crews will continue work on drainage improvements (see photo above). Crews will also begin rough grading and installing temporary shoring in the median. Please expect trucks entering and exiting the median at night and day/night noise.
  • Romero and Oak Creek Bridges
    • Crews will remove guardrail, begin removal of old bridge sections, and install temporary shoring to prepare for temporary widening for upcoming lane shifts. Please expect day/night noise.

Olive Mill Roundabout

  • The majority of construction occurs between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm.
  • Crews are finishing up irrigation and planting.

San Ysidro Roundabout

  • The majority of construction occurs between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm.

  • Work will continue on the roadway and median islands. Split-rail fencing, cable railing, and landscaping are being installed (see photo above).
  • Utility companies will also continue work in the area and along N Jameson Ln. Please expect flaggers directing traffic as needed for the roundabout project and utility work. Please expect 5-10 minute delays.

Highway 101: Summerland
The Summerland segment is located between Sheffield Drive and North Padaro Lane.

  • Highway 101
    • Freeway lanes & Evans Ave Undercrossing
    • Crews are finishing up construction activities and guardrail work.
  • Landscaping
    • Crews will begin irrigation work at the northbound on-and-off ramps at Sheffield Dr. Traffic will shift to one side of the ramps during daytime working hours with the ramps remaining open.
  • Ortega Hill Bike Path and northbound on-ramp at Ortega Hill Rd
    • Crews will grind bikeway pavement and re-stripe lanes at night between Jan 24 – 26. Flaggers will direct bike and pedestrian traffic during this work. The on-ramp will be closed as needed during this work. Please expect night noise.

Highway 101: Padaro
The Padaro segment is located between North Padaro Lane and Santa Claus Lane.

  • Highway 101 & ramps
    • Northbound lanes and ramps
      • Crews will continue to install rebar and concrete for Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement. Crews will continue work on new drainage improvements, retaining walls, safety barriers, fencing, and signs. Pavement grinding will begin to smooth out new lanes. Please expect night noise.
    • Toro & Arroyo Parida Creek Bridges
      • Crews will continue work on safety barriers and concrete staining
    • S Padaro Ln Undercrossing
      • For the new bridge, crews will work on safety barriers and retaining walls under the bridge (see photo above).
  • N Padaro Interchange
    • Concrete Mix Site: Jan 24 – 25, 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, crews will mix concrete for the Padaro segment northbound lanes. By mixing concrete on-site, the project saves an estimated 463,771 truck miles, reduces water use by 400,000 gallons (concrete mixed on-site uses less water), and saves taxpayers between $10-$15 million.
    • Concrete recycling continues by the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp at N. Padaro Ln.
  • Sound walls
    • Northbound by Serena Park
      • Crews will continue safety barrier work and block installation for the new sound walls.

Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara is a project undertaken by Caltrans and SBCAG in cooperation with local agencies to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Highway 101: Carpinteria is the first segment under construction as part of Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara project.
