Community Stands in Solidarity With Charlottesville

Hundreds of locals came together on Sunday to stand in peaceful solidarity with Charlottesville, Virginia, where protests had turned violent the day before. What started off as a white supremacist rally, tragically ended with vehicular manslaughter and the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
The rally held in De la Guerra Plaza was organized by Indivisible Santa Barbara, Just Communities, Santa Barbara Women’s March, 350.org, #Resist, Campus Democrats, and several other local activist groups. Everyone came together to stand with the people of Charlottesville who created a counter-protest to the white supremacy.
UC Santa Barbara held a similar protest on Monday at their Multicultural Center, gathering to discuss plans on how to move forward as a community in light of the tragic events and ongoing white nationalist attacks throughout the country.
Speakers at both rallies advocated for standing together against hatred and inequality, with the common phrase used: “if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”
Organizers taught the crowd chants and spoke to keep working towards racial justice, to hold loved ones accountable.
