Coast Guard search-and-rescue crews suspended their efforts after 10 hours of searching for a person in the water near the Port of San Luis, Calif., Friday evening.

The individual was described to be a six-foot tall 190-pound caucasian male with short blond hair wearing black swimming trunks and a black long sleeve shirt.

Watchstanders at Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center received notification of a missing person in the water at approximately noon.

Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach immediately launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boatcrew from Station Morro Bay to search for the missing male.

Assisted with the search:

  • a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu
  • San Luis Harbor Patrol
  • San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office
  • California Highway Patrol

The Coast Guard urges mariners to always:
.Stay Informed – The public should be aware of weather conditions and monitor the progress and strength of currents through local television, radio and internet. Check the current and expected weather and water conditions before heading out, and be aware that weather conditions can quickly change.
.Wear life jackets while on the water.
.File a float plan with friends, family members and local marinas before heading out. The list should include the number of passengers aboard the vessel, vessel’s destination and expected time of return.
.Always have a working marine-band radio on board.
.Carry marine flares on board the vessel.
.Ensure bilge pumps are operational and vessels are secure for heavy winds and rain.
