Santa Barbara City firefighters responded to a chimney fire in the 300 block of W. Valerio on Sunday evening.
Before 11:00 p.m., Battalion 712, Engine 1, Engine 3, and Truck 1 responded to a report of a chimney fire. Upon arrival, crews reported an active fire coming from the chimney area of the structure.
E1 extinguished the fire and T1 overhauled the chimney to make sure there was no extension into the attic. E3 performed a salvage operation in the interior of the residence and made sure no items were damaged inside the home, reports the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.
The original report was called in by neighbors and there were no injuries.
Another good reason, aside from not polluting the air we breathe, for not burning wood.
Yeah, because this is such common threat…. geez enough with the anti-wood soapboxing!
We’ve been heating with wood for almost 50 years (no furnace). It’s important to have the chimney cleaned every couple of years to prevent fires.
Creosote build up in chimneys is made worse by burning wood that is not completely dry, wood like pine that is very resinous and from incomplete combustion. A proper wood fire, once hot gives off very little smoke.
