Cement truck loses load over three blocks in the city
In the morning of August 31, 2019, the Santa Barbara Police Department received numerous reports about a commercial size cement truck that was driving south on Anacapa Street spilling a large amount of concrete out of the rear drum. The spill started in the 100 East Block of De La Guerra Street and spanned until the intersection of East Cota and Anacapa Streets, approx. 3 city blocks.
It seems the driver had the drum rotation set to “spill” instead of “mix” when he drove away from the work site. The spill caused a serious traffic hazard and the roads were shut down to vehicles for several hours while Public Works called in a clean-up crew to manage the incident.
The California Highway Patrol responded to assist with the investigation. An inspection of the cement truck was completed and there was several equipment related vehicle code violations. It also appears the driver of the cement truck had been operating this type of commercial vehicle for less than a week on his own.
The case is being referred to the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office for review and filing against the driver and the cement company, Mission Ready Mix for 374.8 PC – Spilling Hazardous Waste, 23113 VC, Dumping Load on Roadway, and 23114 VC, Not Securing Load. This case was also sent to Risk Management to recuperate the City’s cost.

Exact location of this spill unknown by me I first heard it was Cota at Anacapa but I heard other streets mentioned as well maybe for Traffic Control.
When doctor, dentist, store make errors, they are sued for negligence. What happens when a careless driver causes so much damage? Does the contractor’s insurance pay and the driver get fired or have to pay some small part of the damage his negligence caused?
I wish I lived in a perfect world where I never made mistakes and could point the finger at everyone else
Oh chillax. Nobody’s perfect! And when YOU hit someone else in your vehicle it’s not called negligence but accident. Wish you’d give others the same courtesy you expect for yourself… it’s called the golden rule for a reason.
