Caltrans is continuing to rebuild and repair six bridges along State Route 192 following debris flows and flooding in the Montecito area.
The demolition of the Arroyo Paredon Bridge (PM 15.50) is scheduled to begin by the middle of next week. Motorists may detour onto Via Real between Cravens Lane and Nidever Road. Lash Construction of Santa Barbara is the contractor for the $10 million replacement of this bridge. There is no estimate when construction will be completed on this bridge.
The Toro Canyon Creek Bridge (PM 12.49) was demolished last week with the reconstruction of new abutments well underway. Construction is expected to be completed this August. Caltrans anticipates demolishing the Romero Canyon Creek Bridge (PM 10.92) early next month following additional work to remove utility lines. The demolition of the Montecito Creek Bridge (PM 8.12) is also expected early next month.
The contractor for the $20 million project to replace these three bridges is Security Paving Company of Sylmar, CA. These projects are expected to be complete in the spring of 2019.
A segment of State Route 192 is open to motorists but through traffic is strongly advised to continue using US 101. State Route 192 remains closed between Sycamore Canyon/Camino Viejo Road and Cravens Lane.
Caltrans is nearing completion on the design of the new bridges and is moving to construction at an accelerated pace. The demolition process follows the completion of the relocation and repair of utility lines by Southern California Edison and the Southern California Gas Companies.
These bridges will likely be closed for several months to through traffic, except for emergency vehicles up to the time of demolition. Barricades and locked gates will secure each location with detours available via local roads.
Emergency responders will maintain access to these locked areas in the interest of public safety.
The San Ysidro Creek (PM 9.6) Bridge has returned to two-way traffic with eleven foot lanes. This configuration will continue until mid-June when a project to replace the bridge rails is expected to begin.
The Toro Canyon Bridge (PM 12.14) remains open under one-way traffic control via stop and yield signs which will remain in place until all repairs are complete.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.
