Californians to Receive Inflation Relief Checks Next Month

By the edhat staff

The majority of Californians should expect to receive hundreds of dollars in inflation relief checks next month.

The state will begin to distribute funds to taxpayers through direct deposit starting on October 7th based on information provided for state taxes. Those who did not electronically file or receive refunds through direct deposit will instead receive debit cards that will be mailed from mid-October through December.

Earlier this year, the state Legislature and Governor Newsom agreed to a $12 billion relief effort that included sending taxpayers making less than $500,000 a year payments between $200 and $1,050, depending on income and family size, to offset the rising housing and gas prices.

Roughly 23 million California residents are eligible, which is set up in three tiers based on the adjusted gross income on 2020 state tax returns. Residents also must have filed their 2020 tax refund by Oct. 15, 2021, have lived in the state of California for at least half of the 2020 tax year and still be California residents on the date the payment is issued. They also cannot have been claimed as a dependent by someone else in the 2020 tax year.

Here’s how it breaksdown:

  • Single taxpayers who earned less than $75,000 and couples who filed jointly and made less than $150,000 will receive $350 per taxpayer and another $350 if they have any dependents.

  • Individual filers who made between $75,000 and $125,000 — and couples who earned between $150,000 and $250,000 — will receive $250 per taxpayer, plus another $250 for dependents.

  • Individual filers who earned between $125,000 and $250,000 and couples who earned between $250,000 and $500,000 would receive $200 each. A family with children in this bracket could receive a maximum of $600.

  • Single taxpayers who earned more than $250,000 and couples who made more than $500,000 combined in 2020 aren’t eligible.

  1. Republicans: “I never get anything from the government, why don’t I qualify for certain things? Woe is me!”
HEY REPUBLICANS: California is sending you a check if you qualify.
Also Republicans: “Why would California send me money – Hillary’s emails, Biden’s laptop, socialism, BLM”

  2. It’s quite easy to find out exactly the financial makeup of the majority of those who play the lotto. Of course multi-millionaires have and do play the lottery, but some of them can never have enough. I used to work in downtown San Diego years ago (before it all got spiffed up), so I knows a bit about what goes on with folks who get the “free” money. Back then, it was food-stamp trading (get $100 in food stamps, sell ’em for $30/40 or whatever you could get in cash…then buy your drugs/booze/cigs). It seems that some folks don’t really know what goes on at the street level….it’s actually pretty ingenious. For example when a child or multiple children are claimed by multiple family members….mother, grandmother, aunt….for welfare money. Yes, I know what I’m talking about having worked with dozens and dozens of these families (don’t worry, I didn’t snitch on them).

  3. FOND, I would never in a million years vote for the Republicans of today. Their me-me-me are disgusting, their track record on human rights is disgusting, their handouts to CEOs and bankers are disgusting, their tax breaks to the rich are disgusting. And by serving me-me-me, I mean rich white males only. Anyone else who supports this party has been fleeced and is being taken advantage of.

  4. WOW SAC — I completely missed that one. I misread “inflation” as “immigration.” My bad, fire away on that one folks, I blew it.
See? A real adult can admit when they absolutely miss the mark here. Try it sometime CMaR/VOICE. You’ll feel better about all the lies, I promise!

    • “Biden flew them. ” – Absolutely false and deliberate LIE. Do you even bother to check facts before lying about them?
“The migrants appear to have never reached Florida. While the DeSantis administration has declined to answer detailed questions on the relocation operation, some of the migrants who arrived in Massachusetts have told media outlets about being approached in San Antonio and given promises of help. One migrant told the Boston Globe that a woman took him and others to a Texas hotel where she gave them meals and offered to help with paperwork. They were then put on a plane. NPR quoted migrants who said they were told they were going to Boston.” —- https://www.politico.com/newsletters/florida-playbook/2022/09/16/questions-confusion-and-fallout-follows-desantis-migrant-transport-00057159
“Flight tracking data shows a flight originated in San Antonio, stopped in Crestview, Florida, and Charlotte, North Carolina, before landing in Martha’s Vineyard.” —- https://apnews.com/article/florida-immigration-ron-desantis-charlie-baker-4fe96d293de4b189299a372b85c95add
CMaR, your new name is just LIAR.

    • Sacjon :
Too funny ! Inform yourself .
Biden flew dozens of flight SECRETLY , in the middle of the night, to various “small”, “discreet” airport in the East in the past 10 months.
Paski confirmed at that time by saying : “it’s not in the middle of the night, it’s “early in the morning” !!! ”
I don’t remember you being outraged by that back then ! Double standards and hypocrisy by any chance ?

    • FOND – oh you’re too cute. You still can’t figure out why you and VOICE and CONSERVATIVESB are so wrong…..
Let me help you guys, again.
VOICE said: “How do you think they got to Florida? They certainly didn’t walk or swim, Biden flew them.”
Reality and facts said: “That is wrong.”
Now, your turn: Show me where Biden flew these immigrants to Florida, supposedly where and only where De Santis then tricked them into flying to “Boston” or “NYC” as they reported?
Facts and the words people use are important. Keep trying, you’ll figure it out soon!

    • FONDSB – “I don’t remember you being outraged by that back then !” Wanna know why? Because it is ENTIRELY different. Biden flew those kids and teens last year to help them. De Santis tricked and flew those families out of spite for democrats.
One’s motive was humanitarian, the other’s (guess who) was childish, un-human, evil.

    • FOND, CMaR of LIES, CONSERVSB – Here are some more facts for you:
“Experts said the vast majority of people trying to cross the southern border into the United States are summarily turned back. Exceptions are made for unaccompanied minors, some of whom are transported by planes to be with relatives or approved sponsors — a practice also done during the Trump administration.” —- https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/mar/16/tyler-kistner/claims-biden-secretly-flying-immigrants-us-cities-/
You guys really need to stop getting your news from political ads.

    • SAC we don’t need to get our news from political ads. There is plenty of video footage of the southern border to know this is a huge issue. We’ve seen the caravans, we’ve seen the fentanyl. What is the difference between a sanctuary city and an approved sponsor? Based on the response from Martha’s Vineyard, the only difference is the approved sponsors don’t throw a fit when the immigrants show up.

    • CONSERVATIVE – Exactly. I believe democrats are giving away money specifically in an attempt to buy votes. It’s the same reason Biden allows people into the US illegally. Biden and the democrats are expecting these people will vote for their party.

    • Both sides of the aisle pressured state legislators to DO SOMETHING during this inflation. They did something, but now it’s the wrong something? What would have been the right move then? Repealing the gas tax was proven to not do anything, lowering prices by mere cents. So what’s the bigger and better idea that your party proposed?

    • DOULIE – At least Biden isn’t making it tenfolds harder to deport these immigrants by flying them and busing them thousands of miles away from the border out of pure childish spite. Keep whining about illegals being here while you clap and cheer for Abbot and De Santis using their taxpayers’ $$$ to lie to trick vulnerable families onto planes and buses.

    • Doulie: California doesn’t need to buy votes, and cash assistance programs are becoming more common, even in red states that traditionally give poor people a kick in the pants in lieu of an adequate safety net. The Biden immigration pearl-clutching is particularly hilarious, as if he’s sitting in the Oval Office “letting people in” instead of continuing deportations and the same broken immigration policies that make skilled workers or refugees wait over 5 years for naturalization. Latino voters are far from a given for Dems. About half end up self-identifying as white in the census and Latinos tend to be more religious and socially conservative than the average, especially the older generation. But the GOP insists on calling them “aliens” instead of recognizing their similarities, all while denying a path to the American dream that was gifted to all of our ancestors, some after little more than a day at Ellis Island.

    • Sacjon- incorrect. How do you think they got to Florida? They certainly didn’t walk or swim, Biden flew them. How do you think they got to the US? They were lied and tricked into believing there’d be jobs and housing for them so how is Abbot/DeSaintis any different than Biden? I think its great the liberal “sanctuary states/cities” that are pushing for open boarders get a taste of what their policies are causing small border towns who also don’t have the infrastructure/capabilities to handle the influx – an influx many times large than a few planes worth of people. Seems Marthas Vineyard would be a much nicer place with more resources for a new immigrant than some podunk boarder town. FYI, within 24 hours those Martha Vineyards immigrants were shipped out of town. Liberal elite hypocrisy / NIMBYism at it again.

    • SAC – Wrong again. DeSantis flew those people to high profile areas to spread the “grief” suffered by Americans living in border cities. Tricked? Do you think these people really care where they are dropped off as long as they are in the US & all the freebies? Tricked would be sending them to Guantanamo.

    • “Based on the response from Martha’s Vineyard, the only difference is the approved sponsors don’t throw a fit when the immigrants show up.”
The immigrants–who are asylum seekers who are in the country legally–were welcomed and cared for by the off season low income workers on MV. The criticism is about Ron DeathSantis lying to these people, spending $12 million in tax money to traffick them, and using them as political pawns.
“SAC do you agree that in the past 12 months the Biden admin has flown immigrants to Florida? ”
Every administration is required by law to relocate youths in their care to permanent facilities after 72 hours. They aren’t dumping them on church doorsteps. I’ve seen thousands of right wingers use this same ridiculous whataboutism talking point while having no idea what they are talking about.

    • CONSERVATIVE – I never said there wasn’t aborder crisis, I said VOICE was WRONG about saying that “Biden flew” the immigrants to Florida where De Santis then flew them to Martha’s Vineyard. THAT IS FALSE and that is all I was talking about. But by all means, keep making up things that I never said.

    • “Do you think these people really care where they are dropped off as long as they are in the US & all the freebies?”
I realize that this is beyond the comprehension of racist right wing garbage, but these people are asylum seekers, fleeing from violence caused by U.S. policy.

    • SAC – C’mon man. Biden is responsible for all these people illegally entering the US. And you think Biden is going to “deport” any one of these people? I don’t whine about anyone, especially illegals. Fact is, they do not belong in the US. I make a statement of fact. I doubt they give a squat about the US for anything other than what the freebies Biden gives them. What of the “vulnerable [American] families,” our veterans? Why are over 20,000 (active) military families now in need of SNAP to subsist? Until an attempt is made to care better for Americans and especially veterans, I don’t give a squat about what you refer to are (illegal) “vulnerable families.”

    • DOULIE – “Biden is responsible for all these people illegally entering the US.” – All what people? Did nobody cross the border while Trump or Bush were in the hot seat?
“And you think Biden is going to “deport” any one of these people?” – Yup. He has. Facts and such.
“I don’t whine about anyone, especially illegals.” – You literally are whining about illegals right now.

    • SAC – I don’t think I’ve said arrests were not being made. I commented there were hundreds of thousands of these people illegally entering the US. There is an open border and I agree CBP are stopping people trying to illegally enter the US. How can you say the border is closed when there are miles of open and unguarded area that does not prevent these people from illegally crossing into the US. My claim is neither disingenuous or false. By not properly securing all the border Biden is allowing these people to cross illegally. This is how he is letting them in. In an analysis done in March of this year based on the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS), conducted by the Bureau of the Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics they estimated the illegal immigrant population grew from 10.22 million in January 2021 to 11.35 million in January 2022, with a preliminary estimate for February of 11.46 million. Quite a jump in illegals in just over one year; and this doesn’t include the past six months. In the future I suggest you check all the facts rather than just those you want to support your position. You didn’t answer my earlier question about whining. When you comment about a post on this site you don’t agree with, are you expressing an opinion or whining about the topic?

    • If the MA govner actually did that, i’d be upset. BUT….. He NEVER “rounded up all the migrants on the street ” See my quote from the News article on Military.com.
You can’t make up “facts,” demand I respond to them and then when I say nothing like that happened and then prove it, you say I’m deflecting. SO….. to play with your hypothetical, yeah I’d be upset if the Republican governor of MA “rounded up all the immigrants” and had the military take them away. BUT…. again, that never happened. Here’s some MORE PROOF of why your claim is absolutely WRONG:
“The Republican governor said the move to the mainland would be voluntary. ” – https://www.wmur.com/article/migrants-marthas-vineyard-cape-cod-military-base/41250659#
“The governor’s office said that the migrants would be voluntarily moved from Martha’s Vineyard” – https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/3646372-migrants-relocated-from-marthas-vineyard-to-massachusetts-military-base/

    • BICYCLIST – yup! It’s not just on yahoo news now either. The allegations of misrepresentation are staggering.
Just one consequence of his barbaric action: “That means that migrants who went unknowingly or under false pretenses to Martha’s Vineyard are at risk of missing those court dates, which may result in them being fast-tracked for deportation.” – https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sheriff-investigates-desantis-migrant-flight-attorneys-claim-trip/story?id=90201998
      De Santis is disgusting.

    • DOULIE and VOICE – here’s yet again further proof that it wasn’t Biden who flew these immigrants to Florida…..
“The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the migrants that were lured from the Migrant Resource Center, located in Bexar County, TX, and flown to Florida, where they were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha’s Vineyard, MA,” the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.”

How many more times do I need to prove you were wrong about “Biden flew them.”

  5. More vote buying. Unfortunately it works as voters are enamored by the checks they receive without realizing as a result of our states policies their quality of life and household purchasing power are reduced significantly more than the checks they receive. A [intentional?] failure of our public education system.

  6. Most of us know that a large percentage of the money from the “relief checks” is going right back to the government via lottery tickets. Laugh all you want, but 30-40% of this money is going to be spent by those who can least afford to play the lotto, but, in fact….play the lotto week in and week our year after year. Like the casinos that comp rooms/shows/etc. to “winners” to keep them around until they become “losers.” Assuming that I get one of these checks, my plan is to donate half, and with the other half of the dough I’ll buy box wine from Smart & Final to wrap up as Christmas gifts for my favorite friends and family (only to those who are 21+).

    • So a suggested google search is your substantiation for the ridiculous claim that 30-40% of the relief will be spent on lottery tickets? They wouldn’t have accepted that as a footnote in college. You seem to throw out a lot of tropes in your posts aimed at certain groups. “Dafax” is that a city in Los Angeles?

    • MarcelK: When I was about 8 years old my father was hospitalized due to a congenital heart condition. He was unable to work for a couple of months, but our family got along financially without the income. This happened during the Christmas holidays. When I returned to school, the teacher asked us to talk about our time off from school and to tell everyone what our favorite Christmas present was. One by one the kids stood up to talk and mentioned their favorite present: bicycles, BB guns, Barbie Doll set, baseball glove, and so on. When it was my turn, I said that the pair of “school” shoes I was wearing was my favorite present….in fact, it was my only present. Mom bought my shiny black leather shoes at the J.C. Penny store on State St.. At that moment when I said “shoes”, the entire class erupted in laughter, including the teacher. I hung my head and was completely devastated, embarrassed, and ashamed. I felt like I was such a loser that all I got was a lousy pair of shoes and not toys like the other “good” kids.. I now find as an adult that instances like that only made me stronger. It took a while, but I was able to forgive those kids/teacher who humiliated me in grand fashion. I bear no ill will toward them or others who do the same today. I take no offense and you have my permission to laugh away. God bless.

  7. Corrections:
Yay, money from the political system. Now I can start a business. Or now I can afford to learn a new skill. The money isn’t free, it was earned by politicians who outmaneuvered the opposition. You think tax is theft, I think eminent domain is part of the US constitution.

  8. Edit^:
Yay, money from the political system. Now I can start a business. Or now I can afford to learn a new skill.
The money isn’t free, it was earned by politicians who outmaneuvered the opposition. You think tax is theft, I think “eminent domain” is part of the US constitution.

    • The money isn’t “free”.
There are conditions to receive the money, and citizens chose to contribute their hard earned money rather than oppose the government. The government owns that money and they are using it to pay people for being California citizens.
It is a poor solution for the inflation problem, but it is decent marketing for politicians. Cash distributions like universal basic income are flawed, because rent-seekers will raise rents as soon as they realize that everyone has additional income.
A better solution would be to invest the money into publicly owned infrastructure like Desalination Plants, ISPs, Farms, Housing, or Power Plants that provide more value than they consume over time.
This strategy would fight inflation by increasing our supply of vital goods, and potentially by allowing citizens to purchase vital goods at the cost of production.

    • CA CONSERVATIVES: “Newsom and Biden are causing inflation which disproportionately impacts the lower/working class”
NEWSOM: “Here’s some cash, I hope this helps!”
CA CONSERVATIVES: “That will literally make the situation worse for everyone except you with the votes it’ll buy you as you try and reach a higher office. How about instead you invest in our infrastructure that would provide real value for Californians and increase our ability to produce and supply vital goods?”
NEWSOME: “You’re a racists threat to our democracy”.

  9. Zero et al, what do you say we lose the us vs. them (red vs blue, conservative vs liberal) rhetoric and just talk issues and common sense? Does it make sense to give away money like this? Isn’t it a drop on the bucket political play for votes? I absolutely agree w you that tax breaks for the wealthy also make no sense.

    • So neither of you qualifies for the handout, yet you’re HERE bitching about it? My God, how can you guys be so bored with so much? Talk about first-world problems… Embarrassing. I’m all for CA giving our overpaid taxes back. Albeit in a socialist way. For me, it’s the Humane society.

    • OGSB – I’m not complaining about the handout and I was being fascicous about “not qualifying.” I don’t make half a million a year unfortunately. I was poking fun at those who bragged about it. I’m upset at the constant whining every time Newsom does anything. I’m also upset about the constant lying here by many, mostly VOICE. I need to let him go, but like a pitbull, I just can’t sometime. Good on you for helping out our animals in need, very noble!

    • Sac, Okay, my bad. I can only skim the comments here when I come in late. It truly is tiresome reading at times. I missed your nuance. Although I agree with VOICE more than the EXTREME other side, cough GT, I get your Pit Bull reference! So difficult!

  10. interesting arguments…i think it’s hilarious that the conservatives complain and start barking nonsense when Newsom (D) gives them money. You guys have the absolute worst memory of any American. Every time a conservative is elected president, they hand out money like candy. Free money! Free Tax breaks. Every time. Where do you think that money comes from? It’s not free and we all end up paying for it. But you sure do love it when your red pressie hands it over to you. This is no different, aside of Newsom wearing a blue neck tie. Tell ya what, if you are a California tax payer and don’t want that money, donate it to the Parks department in town. They could use the extra funds.

    • With tax breaks the money doesn’t “come from” anywhere. It is money not collected by the government. Government expenditures, like these inflation checks, come from money collected via taxes. We’re in a budget surplus here in CA, a rather large one, meaning CA collected more in taxes than it needed. CA could have suspended the gas tax, which would have directly impacted those most affected by high energy prices, it was proposed but not accepted. CA could have lowered the sales tax, they could have waived income taxes for those earning less than $48,435 (the top of the 6% income tax break), it didn’t. Instead they’re sending a check directly to voters, coincidently right around the time they’ll be mailing ballots. If you’re pointing left or right and saying “they’re the bad guys” you’ve already lost, and “they” have won.
