I was thrilled when a mated pair of Western Bluebirds (WEBLs,) that had successfully fledged a brood last July, returned to our yard last December and began flitting around their old nest box.
I immediately laid out my usual inducement – fresh meal worms! It worked and they have been here ever since.
Theybegan nest building in earnest on March 9th!
The first egg was laid on Sunday, March 26th and the fifth and final on Thursday, March 30th.
The female is currently incubating the clutch while the male stands guard, delivers food and generally cheerleads and gives moral support.
Hatching should commence on or about April 12th or shortly thereafter.
They were delighted to pose for their respective portraits yesterday.
Brook = brood?
Looks like the Edhat editor made a typo when preparing the little blurb for the front page.
You’ll note my body copy reads correctly.
What splendid photos. Seeing Bluebirds always makes me smile. Good job, Chuck, providing habitat, housing and sustenance. Can’t wait to see the chicks.
Keep us posted! SO sweet and such Easter colored eggs. The bird world is a (mostly) peaceful parallel universe.
Beautiful birds (and eggs)! Nice photos too. Would love to see pictures of the baby birds when they hatch.
Blessings to you (and to your sweet little bluebirds too!) for welcoming this precious little family. We need more birdsongs in our world.
