Santa Barbara County bars, nightclubs, pubs, breweries and wineries should immediately close to the public under new guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on Tuesday. Restaurants and other food facilities offering on-site dining should immediately transition to only offering delivery or take-out service as part of the public health effort to slow the spread of coronavirus disease. The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is urging local bars nightclubs, pubs, breweries, and wineries to comply with this request immediately and to cancel any planned St. Patrick’s Day celebrations or events.
The goal of the guidance is to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in communities. Bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and other food facilities are locations where people from many parts of the community gather, increasing the chances of transmitting the virus that causes coronavirus disease. While many bars, nightclubs and pubs traditionally hold events for St. Patrick’s Day, these are particularly dangerous at this point in the coronavirus pandemic, as they could result in widespread transmission of the disease in Santa Barbara County.
Grocery stores, markets and activities such Foodbank distribution sites are not being asked to close at this time as they provide critical services to the community. CDPH has provided social distancing guidance for these operations, such as ensuring at least 6 feet of space between groups of unrelated people while shopping or standing in line.

Who exactly is going to enforce this? Will the police take action? We have a lot of bad actors in town and I suspect some will ignore the DCPH mandate.
I will show up and video them and post it online and shame them and destroy their reputations forever.

The wording is “should” and is not legally enforceable, the police will not be enforcing this. Since these entities clearly do not care about the raw facts and recommendations from agencies that know better, public shaming goes a long way, for both businesses and individuals. TELL the businesses that are open and ignoring distancing recommendations how you feel. TELL the people in your lives who choose to dine out and attend other gatherings how disappointed and ashamed you are in them. Put your money where your mouth is: if you are ordering takeout, REFUSE to order from restaurants who have not closed their doors to dine-in customers – and tell them that!
This is NOT a mandate. It’s still a “should” for the time being.

the sheer volume of people “being let go” from the service industry will lead to riots that will be far more damaging than this “virus” is showing itself to be.

Guess what, the longer selfish and greedy people stay open, the longer they will spread the disease because they can’t understand that doing so will extend the trajectory of this entire event and its economic impact on everyone–me, you, and them. We all get to take a hit, and if people do the right thing, then it will all be over a lot sooner. This is a small town. If people want to destroy their long term reputations for short term gain, then I not only have little sympathy for them, but I will be working to accelerate the destruction of their reputations by honesty reporting on their actions. I don’t have any work, so I will have a lot of time to do this.

Edhat should is a mandate. City Council is putting together a detailed ordinance that closes bars and sit down restaurants and others types of businesses.
“Flattening the curve” will help our hospitals not be inundated with cases. They will hopefully be able to treat everyone. For that, this will last much longer as it spreads slower. The opinion that everyone stays home and doesn’t go to work is ignorant. In certain close environments, yes. Everyone else needs to provide for their families! Of course, be diligent, but we’re not all able to sit home and wait this out.
Makes sense to flatten the curve but it should (again, that word) apply to all food distributions, not just TJ, Ralphs, etc. Take a look at the gatherings of people by the former church on Mason/Voluntario for the free food: all close together, including the people handing out the food; then, the recipients sit close to each other, maybe a foot of distance. Maybe public shaming will help — maybe not. Probably the Wednesday distribution by the Franklin Center is better managed but there may still be a problem there.
4:39, I’m sure you’d think I’m left wing. I believe strongly in individual responsibility which includes thinking as much about others as you do about yourself and stepping up to be a responsible member of the community when people are at risk.
I consider those to be core left wing beliefs…maybe you’re more left wing than you realize 🙂
i’m merely making an observation that.. in this current climate of the world.. one where the media has been full on hyping everything that happens for the last many years… where social polarization has been pushed so hard and so constantly… where multiculturalism has all these people pretending to be nice to eachother….. that when a “SHTF” situation happens… there WILL be completely divergent responses, simply because a great many people don’t trust the media or the govt anymore (and no thats not just “trump voters”)
so it’s a pipe dream to think there will be anything even approaching 100% compliance with overarching societal values.

Xantus here is a prime example of ignorance of the dynamics of epidemics when the pathogen is contagious before symptoms are present.
I swung home via the Mission Rose Garden, and lots of people were NOT maintaining proper social distancing boundaries while playing games on the grass. I hate to sound like a grinch, but people need to start distancing themselves properly now or else they’re going to be at triage tents in front of Cottage in a couple weeks.

Might be good idea to quarantine all packages before bringing them into house or kitchen.
I might take matters into my own hands and put up signs to practice social distancing signs at the Rose Garden later today. A couple groups were playing that game where you bounce the ball on the little trampoline which guarantees that 100% of the participants share germs.
Yesterday he said he predicted pandemic all along. Total liar.
