As we hope for a moderate extended rainy season that will fill reservoirs and nourish slopes, the austere beauty of our region stood out from the air. We flew an informal “moisture survey” to see how vegetation is handling this protracted drought.
How long before we get enough rain to green it up with an inch or two from a series of storms? Right now even the beach out past Bacara isn’t getting enough dew from coastal fog and moist air to begin greening. The water inlet in Cachuma may soon need the feed pipe again. There’s still a gradual release below the dam, creating a green belt and pools for some miles down the riverbed.
