Are Tourists Visiting Local Beaches?

By an edhat reader

It appears that since Santa Barbara currently has no beach parking restrictions or closures like many other SoCal counties, we are experiencing an influx of out of town visitors to our beaches during this oncoming heat wave.

Miramar and Butterfly Beach parking were at capacity, with a majority of cars being from out of the area based on observed license plate frames. There were Sprinter Vans parked ON the Coral Casino promenade finishing up their al fresco waterfront happy hour.

It is quite apparent that differing restrictions between counties are enticing folks to frolic in the less restricted regions.

  1. It’s encouraging to see people starting to get out again. Beaches are getting busier, freeway traffic is increasing, and hopefully business is picking up as well. Unfortunately, many businesses will never re-open and we are soon going to start to see just how severely we have damaged the economy.

  2. Have a local contractor buddy that hired three carpenters from WA. They came down when WA shut down their residential construction biz. It’s a fire rebuild and contractor couldn’t find enough local guys. The contractor is stoked with the productivity of the WA crew versus the locals. Says he’ll be sad when they head home soon. Wishes it weren’t so, but there it is.

  3. ” tell that to the people who died and are dying from community spread ” … that whole.. 5 people in our county? in as many weeks? (we are now almost to 6 weeks of lockdown + the 1-3 weeks of supposed time of initial spread) – there was not even a hint of any kind of exponential increase in deaths. no articles about a major shortage of essential workers in our area… eventually you will have to give up the hype machine and invest your fears in reality.

  4. “haha the five deaths is BECAUSE of the isolation and social distancing orders, not in spite of them !! lift them and see what happens !”
== that’s a Very, Very interesting phrase. that can easily mean the opposite of what you think it means. keeping people cooped up… anxious, on edge… can just as easily be a cause, not the cure. Notice how on the County statement about beaches they say “we will re-close the beaches if they are too CROWDED” … not.. if cases rise… just… if too crowded. How will the counterpoint ever be proven if you don’t let it happen?

  5. 2:08 – which of the infected or deceased caught it while “taking their kids to the beach or just walking?” Was it the elderly with the pre-existing conditions or the prison inmates that were out walking on the beach? Just curious since you seem to know!

  6. Predict that the WA crew is cranking on your buddy’s job. They ain’t at the beach. Most SB carpenters won’t work when it’s raining, when there’s surf, when it’s hot, when they can’t bring their dog to the jobsite, etc., etc. And don’t get me started on the Westmont humanities grads now calling themselves a contractor…

  7. The question “Are Tourists Visiting Local Beaches?” I have seen the motels on upper State filling up now where they were empty a couple of weeks ago so we are definitely attracting tourists. I don’t think that is a good thing just now.

  8. Tourists from all over are indeed coming to SB in droves. At least judging by the heavy action at the vacation rental that is less than six feet from my bedroom window. Big out door parties–lots of yelling, and lots of coughing. L.A. license plates on some. Thanks for sharing your Covid-19 with us L.A. tourists, this is a good time to party!

  9. If tourists are truly that dumb that they’re even here during this time, then maybe we need to check IDs at the beaches and only allow locals so as to dissuade tourist from coming here and spreading the virus! What if people from lax states are coming here? THIS is a problem!

  10. BENE – as much as I hate snitching, you should call the cops on any parties with outside people. They need to learn the hard way to stay the eff away from our town. We have been sacrificing so much and working so hard to keep the curve down, it would be almost criminal for some outsiders to come here and ruin it for us. TOURISTS GO HOME!!

  11. People are renting out their vacation rentals? What? If you see that I strongly recommend you turn them in. That is really unsafe right now – especially as the vacationers are going to frequent stores, etc.

  12. SACJON, I agree. All our sacrificing could be for nothing if too much of this happens. People from L.A. and other spots where the shelter in place rules are more draconian than santa Barbara’s are heading up here to face less restrictions I’ve heard. They want to have the fun here that they aren’t allowed to have in their own town. I hate snitching too, though I would call cops in this case if I thought they’d care. I’ve heard police aren’t doing anything about large parties. People I know have called with the same problem and been told this. It is an illegal vacation rental, so I suppose I could call the city and “zone” them . But that would take months to get enforcement.

  13. XANTUS you and many others do a great job of demonstrating precisely that the “lockdown” is working. GET IT?
Have you ever fought a fire? Funny how easy it is to put out a small fire, but once they are out of control, there’s no stopping them. DO YOU GET IT NOW?
How many dead would it take to change your point of view. Give me a number of how many of your fellow Americans you are okay with dying.

  14. give you a number? here’s a number that matters. “Severe lockdown has some negative implications. Its immediate result is an increase in the level of unemployment and the drop in GDP (in Israel, it is estimated that every month of lockdown is reducing the GDP by 8%). This will eventually lead to an increase in poverty and to human life
loss due other diseases.” — https://jonathanturley.org/2020/04/26/citing-privacy-concerns-israel-ends-cellphone-location-tracking-for-enforcement-of-quarantine/
