A 27-unit apartment complex is proposed above and around the current Cantwell’s Market building on State Street in Santa Barbara.

The Santa Barbara City Planning Commission will perform a concept review of the project on Wednesday afternoon.

The proposal for 1529-1533 State Street includes a four-story mixed-use project combining commerical and multi-family residential apartments. The 27 units will have an average of 811 square feet and comprise of a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units on the second, third, and fourth floors.

The 18,000 square-foot site is currently developed with two commercial buildings, Cantwell’s Market and a dance studio, along with a commercial parking lot.

The proposed project involves demolition of the existing structures, although Cantwell’s Market is expected to close during the construction then reopen in the new space that fronts the corner of State and Arrellaga Streets.

The ground floor will include 12 parking spots for the commercial building. A basement parking lot with 22 residential parking spaces and 27 residential bicycle spaces are accessible through a ground floor garage entrance on Arrellaga Street.

Commissioners conducted a site visit on Tuesday morning nd will review this design on Wednesday (September 13) at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall.
