A small airplane crashed in an Orcutt field sparking two brush fires on Saturday evening.

The pilot was able to self-extricate from the plane and was uninjured.

At 5:21 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to an adjacent field near Marcum Street and W. Clark Ave in Orcutt.

Crews discovered a small red prop plane had crash landed causing two separate brush fires approximately a 1/2 acre each.

Air Support Helicopter 964 was called in to assist ground crews as they worked to contain the fire. It took about thirty minutes for firefighters to halt the fire’s forward progress at a total of 2.5 acres.

No homes were threatened and some resources will remain on scene to mop up the hot spots.

The cause of the airplane crash is under investigation.
