Maybe the dog feels a disaster is imminent. For example, people in Turkey are alerted by wolf activity before an earthquake event. Animals are “extra-sensory” in a biological as well as an instinctive sense.
At any rate, Santa Barbara is full of “dog whisperers”. Even as an amateur, I have encountered aggressive behavior whilst running at dawn. Unless the dog’s upper lip curls exposing fangs – I know it’s not truly aggressive. Patience and simple body movements can put the animal at ease.
I surely hope things turned out well.
