Additional Cases of COVID-19 Delta Variant in Santa Barbara County

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has been notified by the UC Santa Barbara Virology Laboratory of two additional COVID-19 cases resulting from the Delta variant. The Delta variant is labeled as a variant of concern by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is known to have increased transmissibility. Two cases resulting from the Delta variant had previously been identified through variant surveillance in late April 2021. County health officials are conducting thorough investigations on both new cases at this time.

“These cases serve as a reminder that even as our progress continues towards the end, our community is still in a pandemic,” shared Van Do-Reynoso, County Public Health Director. “We have a tried and true method of preventing severe illness and hospitalization from the COVID-19 Delta variant, and that is getting vaccinated.  If you are eligible and have not yet been vaccinated, we urge you to get your first shot as soon as possible.”

The COVID-19 vaccines available broadly in the United States are highly effective, and free of cost to every eligible community member. Persons that have received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine are urged to receive their second dose in order to gain optimal protection. A person is not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after their final dose.

“As we approach the upcoming holiday weekend, we advise all community members, whether vaccinated or not, to remain vigilant and practice the safety precautions that have led us in the right direction,” said Dr. Henning Ansorg, County Health Officer. “Stay home if you are ill, wear a mask in crowded indoor settings, keep events outdoors when possible, and practice good hand hygiene.”

County Public Health will continue monitoring for the Delta variant and providing timely guidance as needed. For COVID-19 updates, along with information about testing and vaccination sites, please visit https://publichealthsbc.org

  1. The same covidiots who refuse to take the vaccine are the same ones who tout invermectin and hydroxychloroquine – for which there is no proven efficacy in the treatment of Covid. Those catching Covid and or dying from Covid now are overwhelmingly the unvaccinated.

  2. They can call me a “covidiot” all they would like. It will not change my stance that I don’t need a vaccine for an illness that is nearly zero threat to me. When a variant is discovered that is killing healthy people in their 30s, I will do the same risk analysis I choose to do today. I am of no risk to others as they have had every opportunity to get the vaccine if they choose to do so.

  3. For all of you fearmongers who are saying/hoping that Delta is going to be a thing here because it was in India, remember that when it hit India, **they weren’t vaccinated**. At all. Even in the United States, we’re over 50% vaccinated in California we’re over 60% vaccinated. Stop being scared!

  4. The GOP has become a domestic terror organization.
Republicans are the most resistant; nearly 3 in 10 say they don’t want one. The share is greater among rural, Republican men, 35% of whom don’t want to get a vaccine.

  5. Mountainman4865 believes it’s a civic duty to credulously suck down social media lies about COVID and regurgitate them here, to save us from the twin scourges of modern medicine and social responsibility.

  6. Also, EastBeach, Emily Brunson is just one Associate Professor of Anthropology whose statement has been ripped out of context with no supporting data provided for her “most likely” statistical claim. It’s pure argument from authority and cherry-picking. We can be pretty sure that Dr. Brunson disagrees with almost everything MM has said here about the virus and vaccines.

  7. “When a variant is discovered that is killing healthy people in their 30s”
All the variants have killed healthy people in their 30s.
“the same risk analysis I choose to do today”
    Let’s see this risk analysis.
“I am of no risk to others as they have had every opportunity to get the vaccine if they choose to do so”
Whether you are a risk to others is not a matter of whether they could have taken measures to avoid the risk (and not everyone can). I think that even a conservative ideologue is capable of realizing this. In fact, if you didn’t realize it, you would not have written that in such a squirrelly way.
But I appreciate it when these sorts of statements and outlooks are explicitly linked to conservative ideology.

  8. CONSERVATIVESB–By refusing to be vaccinated, you make yourself a living petri dish for the evolution of new variants of the disease, which might outsmart the vaccines, and also might be more virulent in people your age. It would not be a problem if the only risk was to yourself, but the pool of those who don’t get vaccinated is the pool of those in whom the virus will evolve. Those who are unvaccinated become the “guinea pigs” for the virus’s experiments in its own evolution.

  9. You certainly are carrying on. Months of use, preceded by months of clinical testing, have shown the vaccines to be both very safe and very effective. Side effects are overwhelmingly rare and treatable. Claiming otherwise is just ignorant antivax FUD.

  10. It is truly amazing that the same people who are so adamant that the GUVMENT is out to get you, that the PHArMa Co’s are EviL and controlling, are the same people who are shouting that the vaccine isnt FDA approved and therefore, dangerous!!!! Um… If only these people had the cognitive ability, critical thinking skills and self awareness to see the irony in their failed logic and life choices… If only.

  11. SBO: If you truly believe what you are saying, then you just need to accept that the people who you are so frustrated with do not, as you say, have the cognitive ability, critical thinking skills and self awareness to see the irony in their failed logic and life choices. Basically, there is nothing that you can say or do that will change this. Like you can’t make a horse a cat, so there’s no point in being so frustrated that it ruins your everyday life. Move on, and be the better person that you are, and not worry so much about “the other guy.” It really is that simple, and you can free yourself and those around you from useless commentary on how “they” need to change.

  12. “I am of no risk to others as they have had every opportunity to get the vaccine if they choose to do so”
That’s not actually true. Children under 12 are not yet eligible. Data out of Israel is showing that efficacy fades a bit. Pfizer is saying that most people will need a booster.
In essence, I still wear a mask indoors in public, because not everyone in my household is vaccinated, nor eligible.
