A Colorful Moon

By Ronald Williams

The Beaver Moon in November is named after beavers who begin preparing for winter. Native Americans also called it the Freezing Moon. I have heard that the moon might not be just gray, so I tried my luck on a stormy night (November 2) and, yes, the moon has colors! Using an 8 inch telescope I combined 96 exposures and then applied PhotoShop to bring out the details of the waxing gibbous 9-day-old moon.

For those early risers, there will be a total lunar eclipse on November 8 with totality occurring at 3:00am. The weather then is forecast to be rainy, which we need, but it may preclude our night sky observations in Santa Barbara.
