It was a hit song in 1925, issued on Columbia records by tenor Vernon Dalhart, who had made a name for himself by recording disaster songs like “The Wreck Of The Old ’97”. I believe “Quake” was written by the Rev. Andy Jenkins.

True story: My grandmother and grandfather planned to honeymoon at the Arlington Hotel in Santa Barbara on the day of the earthquake. But thankfully, my grandfather had urgent business to attend to, and so they postponed the trip for the next day, and so were spared the disaster. Had they kept their original plans, would I even been born?
One of the silver linings is that the entire State Street had to be rebuilt. That is when the decision to make pretty Spanish styled roofs and architecture was started
