Firefighters responded to a large brush fire Tuesday afternoon at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

At 3:00 p.m., Vandenberg’s Fire Department located on base responded to the wind-driven fire with Santa Barbara County and Lompoc Fire Departments responding to assist, according to Mike Eliason, spokesperson for the County Fire Department.

As of Tuesday evening, the fire had reached about 50 acres with a Santa Barbara County Air Support helicopter being released from the scene, said Eliason.

Weather conditions in the area pushed drift smoke towards Vandenberg Village and the Mission Hills area north of Lompoc. Later that evening the wind pushed smoke back towards Santa Ynez Valley. Eliason said their dispatch has received several queries but there were no other fires in the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
