The 2020 Census for the first time ever can be completed on the phone or online.
Officials encourage everyone to take part in this year’s census as it can help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into the Santa Barbara community. It also determines how many seats in Congress each state receives.
The United States has counted its population every 10 years since 1790 and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2.
The survey includes questions on age, race, sex, and household. It’s estimated that each person accounts for $2,000 a year for the next 10 years that can be added to the community.
For instance, if more children are counted in a specific area of the community it could help bring upgrades to current schools or plan for a new school. Similarly, if more people are concentrated in a certain area, it could help funding for new or upgraded roads and infrastructure.
Local city governments are urging residents to fill out the census with informational videos, fliers, and events.
At the Goleta City Council meeting on March 3, the Goleta City Council approved a resolution in support of Census 2020 and the City’s Make Goleta Count/Haz Que Cuente Goleta campaign. The City Council also saw the debut of the City’s new Make Goleta Count/Haz Que Cuente Goleta video, which features a cross-section of community leaders and residents encouraging participation in the census.
The City of Goleta is also hosting a 2020 Census event on March 14 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park, 170 S. Kellogg Avenue. The event will feature opportunities to learn more about the census, key speakers, booths, and an area available to complete your census online. The family-friendly event will also include a DJ, games, raffle, food, and more.
The official census day is April 1st.
