Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in this hands-on informal workshop with SBMA Teaching Artists. Each month explore a different medium—clay, metal, ink, wood, photography, paper—inspired by works of art in the Museum’s collection or special exhibitions. In May, create a pinch pot from air dry clay. Draw animals and patterns into the clay, then finish with a watercolor wash, inspired by "Shallow Bowl with Pipal Leaves Fish Motif" (3500 -2500 BCE).

State Street Ballet Academy presents Alice in Wonderland on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 6:30 PM and Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 2:00 PM. Join Alice on her journey into the magic of Wonderland! This platinum anniversary concert highlights The Symphony's brilliant principal players in Concerto Grosso, American composer Jonathan Leshnoff’s work, previously commissioned for our 60th. Violín soloist and multi-Grammy© nominee Philippe Quint brings his imaginative approach to Mendelssohn’s gorgeous Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, one of the most prominent and highly regarded works in the concerto repertoire for violín, while Johannes Brahms’ monumental Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 - which took the composer 21 years of revisions to declare ready for public performance in 1876 - will bring the evening - and our 70th Anniversary Subscription Season - to a triumphant close.

If you have a passion for art and are interested in serving the community, the SBMA Docent Program is a rewarding and supportive environment to learn and have fun.

Volunteer docents engage with visitors of all ages through guided tours to make works of art accessible to everyone. An art background is not required. Diverse applicants with an interest in learning about art, working with students, and facilitating positive Museum experiences for visitors are encouraged to apply. In addition to touring, docents enjoy an extensive program of continuing education provided by curators and local experts. The year-long training course begins each September.

Writers of all levels are invited to participate in this informal exploration of the Museum’s galleries as an impetus to writing. Monthly sessions are led by a visiting writer who begins with a conversation and prompt, partially inspired by works on view. Participants write on their own, then reconvene to share and comment on each other’s work. Please bring something on which to write.

The May session is led by local poet, artist, and Poet/Teacher with California Poets in the Schools, Cie Gumucio.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is pleased to announce “The Mystery of the Marie” with Teresa Newton-Terres – the May offering in the museum’s monthly lecture series. Taking place on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 7 p.m., Newton-Terres’ presentation will delve into her years-long search to solve the mystery of the Marie’s disappearance after it was shipwrecked off Santa Cruz Island in 1960. The lecture will be held at the museum and registration is required. The cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members, $10 for all other members, and $20 for the general public.
