Winter After-School Multimedia Class
Combine materials and techniques to create mixed media pieces that include painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Depictions of birds and trees crossing cultures and time in the Museum’s collections will ignite imaginations and inspire both individual and collaborative creations.

Continuing its celebration of coastal living, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is thrilled to present The Peaceful Sea: Paintings by Kevin A. Short, an exhibition featuring more than 30 seascapes and ocean-themed landscapes by the renowned contemporary painter and Santa Barbara native. Thanks to the generous support of Mimi Michaelis, June G. Outhwaite Charitable Trust, Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation, the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation, and American Rivera Bank, the presentation will be on view to the public from August 11 through December 31, 2022.

Featuring a cast of 30+ performers, 6-70 years old, from Carpinteria - Santa Barbara - Goleta - Ventura - Santa Paula presented by The Alcazar Ensemble at the historic Alcazar Theatre.
In this holiday classic, an old man named Kris Kringle fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Kringle is such a hit that he soon appears regularly at the chain's main store in midtown Manhattan.
When Kringle surprises customers and employees alike by claiming that he really is Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine his mental health and, more importantly, his authenticity.

Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in this hands-on informal workshop with SBMA Teaching Artists. Each month explore a different medium—clay, metal, ink, wood, photography, paper—inspired by works of art in the Museum’s collection or special exhibitions.
In December, print a winter scene in black ink on gold paper inspired by Winter Landscape (18th –19th century) and Crows in Early Winter, two Japanese screens in the Museum’s collection of East Asian Art.
*Special time due to the Museum closing early for the Member’s holiday event.

Writers of all levels are invited to participate in this informal exploration of the Museum’s galleries as an impetus to writing. Monthly sessions are led by a visiting writer who begins with a conversation and prompt, partially inspired by works on view. Participants write on their own, then reconvene to share and comment on each other’s work. Please bring something on which to write.
In this special December session, SBCC Creative Writing Professor Joshua Escobar explores the idea of transformation as a prompt for writing. Participants may submit their work for consideration of inclusion in a related public reading and performance at SBMA on February 12 or to the upcoming issue of Open Fruit, SBCC's Creative Writing Magazine. For further information, contact jmescobar2@pipeline.sbcc.edu.
