Winter After-School Multimedia Class
Combine materials and techniques to create mixed media pieces that include painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Depictions of birds and trees crossing cultures and time in the Museum’s collections will ignite imaginations and inspire both individual and collaborative creations.

Whales Are Superheroes! Saving the Planet One CO2 Molecule at a Time: Student Art Exhibit
In November and December 2021, Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) staff worked with students from Laguna Blanca Middle School, Peabody Charter, Santa Barbara Charter, and Santa Ynez Elementary School to teach them about the importance of whales to the environment and to create whale-inspired artwork to coincide with the museum’s newest exhibit, Whales Are Superheroes! The result of those efforts is on display in SBMM’s new student art exhibit, Whales are Superheroes! Saving the Planet One CO2 Molecule at a Time, opening on April 14, 2022, and on display through July 31, 2022.
The Wonder of Whales: Two Artists’ Perspectives
As part of its multi-faceted celebration of whales this spring and summer, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum announces the April 14 opening of its newest art exhibit, The Wonder of Whales: Two Artists’ Perspectives, which features whale paintings by two local artists, John Baran and Kelly Clause. Thanks to the generous support of Chevron, Dreier Family, Emmett Foundation, Mimi Michaelis, Hank and Mari Mitchel, June G. Outhwaite Foundation, and Wood-Claeyssens Foundation, the exhibit will be open to the public from April 14-July 31, 2022. Although their subjects are often similar, each artist brings his or her unique perspective, technique, style, and medium to the work in this exhibit.

Braille Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. We offer a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages helping to demonstrate that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.
We serve the community from seven centers, and hundreds of community outreach locations throughout Southern California, and lead popular national programs like Braille Challenge and Cane Quest. Our staff and volunteers understand losing your vision can be scary, but we believe it is not the end of independence, but a new way of living.
A variety of free classes, workshops and support groups are available to help you or a loved one stay active, remain independent and enjoy connections with others.

Olfactory Ecologies and Contemporary Art
Although the sense of smell has long been marginalized in the Western aesthetic tradition, contemporary artists have been experimenting with olfactory materials that act on breathers on a visceral level, entering and biochemically transforming their bodies, minds, and moods. Focusing on artwork by Peter De Cupere, Boris Raux, Anicka Yi, Renée Stout, and Tanaïs, this talk considers three ways of framing scent as a medium of environmental knowledge and intimacy: as a vehicle for communicating environmental toxicity, as an intoxicating and intimate form of human and more-than-human communication, and as a way of making public "smellscapes" more breathable and meaningful for people and communities whose olfactory experience has been attenuated by Western projects of deodorization and olfactory consumption.

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based artist Janna Ireland discusses her multi-faceted practice that includes intriguing staged tableaux of family life and an extensive and ongoing photographic interpretation of the architecture of Paul R. Williams, the renowned 20th-century Black architect who designed many of Southern California’s iconic buildings. Janna Ireland’s three photographs of Paul R. Williams’s Hillside Memorial Park are now on view in the SBMA exhibition, The Lens of Architecture.

PROGRAM DETAILS:
Teens meet each Saturday from 10:00 am–1:00 pm for five (July) or four (Aug) consecutive weeks.
Each Saturday, teens will work in groups of eight with two AHA! facilitators.
Teens who fulfill their LLF contract will receive either a stipend of $20 per workday OR 15 (July) or 12 (August) Community Service hours.
