The Preston Morton Collection, which forms the core of American art at SBMA, was gifted in 1961 upon the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Museum’s founding. In so doing, Preston Morton ensured that SBMA could boast one of the most comprehensive overviews of American art from the 18th to the mid-20th century among mid-sized institutions. The timing of the gift was significant, representing a corrective to the European bias of midcentury canonical modernism and a proud reassertion of home-grown American art.
This selection of small format paintings is a reminder of the breadth of the Museum’s holdings in this area. Oil and brush conjure the illusion of near and far persuasively, from the close perspective of still life, to the life-size proportions of bust portraiture, to sublime expanses of land and sky. Whether within hand’s reach or at an immeasurable distance, both types of visual experience are captured within the confines of a canvas no more than 15 inches in diameter.
Artists represented include William Merritt Chase, Frederic Edwin Church, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Thomas Eakins, Walter Gay, George Inness, George Luks, Jervis McEntee, John Frederick Peto, Levi Wells Prentice, Edward Henry Potthast.

If hindsight is 20/20 vision, Arlo Guthrie has a vast perspective looking forward. After decades of perpetually touring, the folksinger is dialing it back a bit. But the road has become a way of life for Arlo: sharing songs and stories, getting to the heard of what really matters, and of course being a comic agitator. It’s in his blood. It’s who he is. It’s what he does. Stirring the pot, questioning the powers that be, and reminding us what it’s all about with humor and passion.
Initially making a name for himself in the sixties with the iconic Alice’s Restaurant Massacree and providing perhaps the most often repeated phrase from Woodstock (“The New York State Thruway is closed, man.”), Guthrie helped define the singer-songwriter genre burgeoning in the seventies. With over thirty albums in his discography, Arlo delivers an astounding time capsule from the works of his dad, Woody Guthrie, to the present day.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Oxnard Walk to End Alzheimer’s event will look a little different this year. The event will be held on Sept. 26, 2020, but instead of a large gathering, the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging participants to walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across their local communities. To add to the festivities, The Collection at RiverPark, which hosted the walk in previous years, is offering a view-only Promise Garden for participants.
At 9 a.m. on the day of the event, the Alzheimer’s Association will kick things off with a virtual Opening and Promise Garden Ceremony, which will be live-streamed on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s app. The Opening Ceremony will feature presentations from local speakers, and the Promise Garden Ceremony will honor the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.
After the ceremonies, participants are encouraged to complete the walk anywhere they choose. When they are finished walking, participants are invited to safely experience the view-only Promise Garden at The Collection near the Splash Pad on Town Center Drive any time before 4 p.m.
For more information about the virtual event and Promise Garden, visit http://thecollectionrp.com/connect. To learn more about the Oxnard Walk to End Alzheimer’s, go to https://act.alz.org/oxnard.
