The Preston Morton Collection, which forms the core of American art at SBMA, was gifted in 1961 upon the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Museum’s founding. In so doing, Preston Morton ensured that SBMA could boast one of the most comprehensive overviews of American art from the 18th to the mid-20th century among mid-sized institutions. The timing of the gift was significant, representing a corrective to the European bias of midcentury canonical modernism and a proud reassertion of home-grown American art.
This selection of small format paintings is a reminder of the breadth of the Museum’s holdings in this area. Oil and brush conjure the illusion of near and far persuasively, from the close perspective of still life, to the life-size proportions of bust portraiture, to sublime expanses of land and sky. Whether within hand’s reach or at an immeasurable distance, both types of visual experience are captured within the confines of a canvas no more than 15 inches in diameter.
Artists represented include William Merritt Chase, Frederic Edwin Church, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Thomas Eakins, Walter Gay, George Inness, George Luks, Jervis McEntee, John Frederick Peto, Levi Wells Prentice, Edward Henry Potthast.

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network celebrates their Second Annual Eco Hero Award honoring visionary mycologist Paul Stamets, and award-winning cinematographer, Louie Schwartzberg.
The Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award honors those who have committed themselves to work in service of the planet and its inhabitants for thirty or more years, with actual solutions and concrete ways forward that benefit many, often on a global scale.
Both Paul Stamets & Louie Schwartzberg will be in attendance to receive the Eco Hero Award, and will share their experiences – what inspired them, how they made their projects happen, and what challenges they faced along the way, with time for the audience to ask questions.
Film clips from their collaboration on joint projects, including the amazing Fantastic Fungi film will be shown. A special treat for the community will be beautiful time-lapse moving photography of nature’s splendor on the outdoor wall of the Lobero Theatre, that Louie Schwartzberg also showed to audiences on the walls of the Vatican in Rome a few years ago. A reception for all ticket holders follows the evening talk.

Dr. Chris Lowe is a professor in marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where he and his students work with acoustic and satellite telemetry techniques to study the movement, behavior and physiology of sharks, rays, and gamefishes. For the last 15 years, Dr. Lowe and his students have been studying baby and juvenile white sharks off the coast of southern California and have greatly contributed to the field of knowledge for this enigmatic species. Using a wide array of technology, they have found that white sharks use southern California beaches seasonally as nursery habitat for their young. This brings juvenile white sharks in close proximity to beach goers. Dr. Lowe will discuss what they have learned about white shark behavior, risks they pose to beach goers and what coastal communities can expect in the future.
