‘Lovely Villa’ is the name of the apartment building in which the filmmaker grew up as he studied to become an architect. This housing project represents an imagination of the ideal community for a modern India. The film explores the architecture of the colony through a personal narrative. ‘Vertical City’ lets the viewer experience the living conditions of places hidden away in a 21st century metropolis. In a far suburb of Bombay, residents from slums are moved into high-rise apartment complexes with the promise of a better life. While these complexes are built to house the poor, they have also been seen as moves to free slum land in prime city areas for commercial development. In New York City, LGBTQ youth-of-color gather out on the Christopher Street Pier, practicing a performance-based artform, Ballroom. This form of expression was made famous in the early 1990s by Madonna’s music video “Vogue” and the documentary “Paris Is Burning.” Twenty-five years after these cultural touchstones, a new and very different generation of LGBTQ youth have formed an artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene. KIKI follows seven characters from the Kiki community over the course of four years, using their preparations and spectacular performances at events known as Kiki balls as a framing device while delving into their battles with homelessness, illness, and prejudice, as well as their gains towards political influence and the conquering of affirming gender-expressions. A multimedia theatrical collaboration between celebrated violinist Jennifer Koh and composer Jean-Baptiste Barrière, The 38th Parallel is named after the line of latitude separating North and South Korea, an arbitrary divide of invisible borders that has transformed the lives of generations. The work incorporates the concept of pansori – a Korean genre of musical storytelling that combines music, visual art and movement – to recount a very personal story of the impact of immigration on three generations and two families. Conceptualized by the highly collaborative Koh, this work draws upon a cast of notable talents to create a revealing and deeply intimate portrait of identity and displacement.

Nearly 60 years ago, on June 7, 1960, the Marie, a converted WWII Landing craft set out at sunrise from Santa Barbara Harbor with seven men working on a covert underwater Raytheon-related project…and was never seen again. Eventually, four victims’ bodies were recovered, but three disappeared along with the Marie’s life boat—the captain, a scientist, and an engineer (Diego “Jim” Terres, Jr). Only 2 years old when her father disappeared, Teresa Newton-Terres decided to investigate the story and try to solve the mystery of the Marie’s disappearance. Unanswered questions led her into a search for information and she heard first-hand accounts, uncovering an untold Cold War mystery which she will discuss in her presentation

Pakistan’s acclaimed Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers are making waves around the world for their riveting interpretations of qawwali, an ancient Sufi improvisational vocal tradition that dates back more than seven centuries. Akram and his brothers are the 26th generation of their musical lineage, trained in qawwali since childhood. With lively, rhythmic hand-clapping and drumming, joyous melodies, inspirational poetry and powerful call-and-response vocals, their mesmerizing performances include songs ranging from 13th-century mystical Persian poems to more recent Punjabi poems that speak of the intoxication of divine love.

Santa Barbara Hillel to honor Aaron & Ina Ettenberg, Bruce Corwin, Louise Wyner and Benjie & Alexi Baker at Hall of Fame celebration

Ericka Huggins is a human rights activist, poet, educator, Black Panther leader, and former political prisoner. For the past 30 years, she has lectured throughout the United States and internationally. Her extraordinary life experiences have enabled her to speak personally and eloquently on issues relating to the physical and emotional well-being of women, children and youth; whole being education; over incarceration; and the role of spiritual practice in sustaining activism and promoting change.

Iconoclastic Brooklyn Rider returns with its new program, Healing Modes, which focuses on the healing properties of music, recognized from ancient Greek civilization to the field of modern neuroscience. At its center is “A Song of Holy Thanksgiving” from Beethoven’s Opus 132, written during a period of recovery in his own life. Brooklyn Rider performs the masterwork alongside responses commissioned from five women composers: Pulitzer Prize-winners Caroline Shaw and Du Yun, as well as Reena Esmail, Gabriela Lena Frank and Matana Roberts.

In this talk, Hill will offer a critical analysis of the current social and political moment. By identifying key issues, challenges, controversies, and trends that have emerged or lingered as of recent, Hill spotlights the work that must be done to sustain the progress of the freedom struggle. Moving beyond mere critique, he also provides concrete solutions as well as sites of hope and possibility for healing our national, local, and university communities. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill is one of the leading intellectuals in the country. His work, which covers topics such as culture, politics, and education, has appeared in numerous journals, magazines, books, and anthologies. Dr. Hill is Distinguished Professor of African American Studies at Morehouse College. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Temple University.
