Plastic production, use, and pollution have been growing steadily for decades, without much public comment or concern. But suddenly, and very recently, there has been strong and widespread backlash against the pervasiveness of plastic. What prompted this sudden change in public opinion? Did plastic pollution itself reach a tipping point? Or did public attitudes toward this lethal pollutant undergo a radical shift? Roland Geyer will discuss the history of global plastic production and disposal and will consider the future of both plastic and public outrage against its environmental impact. A reception will follow.

Roland Geyer is a Professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB. In his research he uses the approaches and methods of industrial ecology, such as life cycle assessment and material flow analysis, to assess pollution prevention strategies based on reuse, recycling, and material and technology substitution. Roland also combines these approaches with research methods from other disciplines in order to study the relationship between environmental performance, economic viability, and technical and operational feasibility of pollution prevention strategies. His overarching goal is to help develop the knowledge, tools, and methods necessary to reduce the environmental impact from industrial production and consumption.

Part 1: Challenges for the Survival of the Modern Economy
Presenter: Peter Gibson Friesen
A wide-ranging analysis of the serious and deep problems that threaten the survival of the modern economy will be offered in this talk. Disruptions, displacements and disparities such as uncertain economic growth, unproductive capitalism, misplaced resource development, extreme inequality of wealth, automation, underemployment, uncertainties in global trade, energy shortages and climate change suggest critical questions. Is there is a danger of slipping back into a feudalistic economy based on coercive loyalty systems? How could a transition to vital, cooperative economies be promoted? How could an economy fully based on renewable energy and a balanced environment be developed? How could a fresh commitment to constitutional rules and beneficial public policy norms energize investment in a healthy economy? These and other questions may be considered by Peter Friesen, a legal and organizational theorist and a distinguished practicing attorney. He has been designated as one of the ten top attorneys in presenting complex issues to juries. The two books on economy, law and organization that he has written provide prescient insights for public debate. Peter has J.D. and M.P.A. degrees and a B.A. from Williams College. Questions from attendees will be encouraged.

Looking back to the values and proposals of a visionary who anticipated the social and economic needs only now being recognized, is a way of discovering creative possibilities for change. Audio-visual archives will help bring out memories of innovative architecture and exciting propositions for changing life-styles and social norms. Listening to this dynamic visionary inspires hope for common-sense transformation. What challenge for change does Buckminster Fuller offer us today? How can Fuller’s ideas contribute to the health of the modern economy? Discussion will be encouraged.
Gary Milliken’s long-standing interest in the ideas of Buckminster Fuller was stimulated in 1964 by a Time magazine cover. He volunteered at the Buckminster Fuller Institute in Los Angeles and joined the staff when the Institute moved to Santa Barbara. Gary earned a B.A. in Environmental Studies at U.C. Santa Barbara.

This series is an interactive space for lively discussions on various theories about race, a safe space for articulating perspectives on identity and belonging which are contextualized by different authors, and an intentional time for centering the narratives of marginalized communities. Discussions will be facilitated by various faculty members, graduate students, and staff members. Readings may be suggested but are not required for attendance. This series hopes to cultivate open dialogue, and a spirit of appreciation and intellectual kinship. Dessert will be provided! All are welcome.

Shyam Selvadurai will read from his novels Funny Boy and The Hungry Ghosts and talk about what it means to be a writer working from the hyphen between Sri Lankan and Canadian. Shyam Selvadurai was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and migrated to Canada with his family at the age of nineteen. He has studied creative writing and theatre and has a BFA from York University, as well as an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. Funny Boy, his first novel, won the WH Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award and the Lambda Literary Award in the US.

Writers of all levels are invited to participate in this informal exploration of the Museum's galleries as an impetus to writing. Each session is led by a visiting writer/facilitator who begins with a conversation and prompts, partially inspired by works on view. Participants are free to write on their own and then reconvene as a group to share and comment on each other's work. Please bring a journal or notebook, laptop, or tablet on which to write. UCSB University Carillonist Wesley Arai will present a special recital commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Storke Tower carillon’s dedication on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 2 pm. The program will feature world premieres of pieces by composers Emma Lou Diemer (Professor Emerita, UCSB) and Aaron David Miller, which were commissioned for the event. The event will also include remarks by distinguished guest speakers. Listeners are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on the grass outside the tower during the recital.

Dr. Maxfield will talked about the ideas that lead to the prediction of black holes and to the information paradox, the mysterious combining of general relativity and quantum mechanics to explain black holes. 

Parallel Stories looks at the power of memory and the family stories that are woven together in the "Homeric" epic and memoir of "In the Country of Women: A Memoir" in a reading and conversation with award-winning author Susan Straight. In this ode to what The New York Times called "the entire multiracial, transnational tribe she claims as her own,” Straight reminds us in powerful, fiercely lyrical language of the grit, hope, courage, resilience, hope, and sorrow inextricably connected to our stories—stories of women, stories of coming to, and leaving, and returning, and in the author’s case, stories written within blocks of where she was born and still lives in Riverside County. This book, addressed in large part to her daughters, is finally and most tellingly about love—transcendent, inconvenient, persistent, imperfect generations of love. Straight has published eight novels, including "Highwire Moon," finalist for the National Book Award in 2001, and "Between Heaven and Here." Her short stories have appeared in "Zoetrope," the "Ontario Review," the "Oxford American," the "Sun," "Black Clock," and many others. Her essays have appeared in "The New York Times," "Reader’s Digest," "Family Circle," "Salon," the "Los Angeles Times," "Harpers," the "Nation," and elsewhere.

UCSB Arts & Lectures and the Department of Music will present Z.E.N. Trio’s Esther Yoo in conversation with pianist Robert Koenig, Chair and Professor at the UCSB Department of Music, on Monday, October 21st from 2-3 pm in Karl Geiringer Hall. The conversation will be moderated by UCSB Professor of Musicology, Derek Katz.

The event presentation addresses the very timely and controversial issue of vaping. It also includes an overview of processing methods to prepare vapes, formulations often used in vapes, and hardware considerations for vape users will be covered. Comparing and contrasting cannabis and nicotine vaping will also be highlighted.

Feminista Jones is a Philadelphia-based feminist writer, public speaker, retired social worker, and community activist. She is an award-winning blogger and the author of four books, including the critically acclaimed 2019 release, Reclaiming Our Space: How Black Feminists Are Changing the World From the Tweets to the Streets. Her writing and activism centers Black American culture, feminism, critical race theory, intersectionality, mental health, poverty, and women’s health and well-being.

An enthralling ensemble of electrifying performers, the Z.E.N. Trio is made up of three standout solo musicians – pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan – who captured the music world’s attention as BBC New Generation Artists. Although they both had been playing individually for years, Tom and Kenny met and began making music together 40 years ago when guesting on local radio KCSB. After they had played a song, the station received a phone call offering them $15 and a pizza to come to play at the Sojourner. They accepted – but only after holding out for free beer. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Flying Fish/Rounder recording artists have now been playing their unique blend of guitar and harmonica blues, rags, and good time music to widely diverse audiences for 40 years. Their live performances include concerts, clubs, and festivals all over the world.

Together and separately they have worked on countless film scores, TV soundtracks, commercials, and sessions. They’ve appeared on television internationally, have played for audiences of 300 million via Voice of America and are frequent guests of National Public Radio. In this talk, Jordan T. Camp examines the state surveillance and repression of Black freedom leaders. He offers a new trajectory of U.S. state formation during the Cold War and a historically grounded analysis of racism and counterinsurgency. Linking the violent 1949 Peekskill, New York attack on Black activist Paul Robeson to counterinsurgency programs, he demonstrates the relationship between the build-up of the largest warfare state on the planet and what he terms a “long vendetta” against the Black radical internationalist tradition. Jordan T. Camp is Director of Research at the People’s Forum, Visiting Scholar in the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and Co-Director of the Racial Capitalism Working Group in the Center for the Study of Social Difference at Columbia University.

Ricky Anywar is founder of the Ugandan organization Friends of Orphans (FRO). His story is the basis for the book Soldier Boy, by Keely Hutton.
