Art Matters Lecture: Todd Cronan
Matisse’s Hands

At the onset of World War II, Henri Matisse's art underwent a startling change of direction. Inventing a dramatic new technique of cut-outs, Matisse explored aspects of the world that were largely absent from his previous work. This talk will trace the development of Matisse's late cut-outs and the new forms of expression they provoked.

Undergraduate oboist Greg Moreno will present a recital with pianist Jared Eben, flutist Maddie Kolkow, and cellist Hannah Paulus on Friday, May 3rd at 5 pm in Room 1145 in the Music Building. Graduate pianist Ching-Yun Chen will present a recital on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 1:30 pm in Karl Geiringer Hall in the Music Building. The program will include Maurice Ravel's piano duet Ma mère l'Oye, Rebecca Clarke's Sonata for Viola and Piano, Johannes Brahms' Vier ernste Gesänge, Op. 121, as well as his Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, Op. 56b. Guest performers will include baritone Byron Mayes, violist Besnik Yzeiri, and pianists Marc Evans and Buyun Li. Ms. Chen is a student of Dr. Charles Asche.

What is Mid-Century Modern?: The Architecture of Richard Neutra and The Eameses

The words “Mid-Century Modern” are everywhere. From Crate & Barrel to Craigslist, Sotheby’s to Walmart, Mid-Century Modern or MCM is the sought-after style for life today. What is it about kidney-shaped pools and steel beams, polished concrete and plate glass, womb chairs, and spider legs that continues to fascinate after all these years? Looking at the works of Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames this talk will explore the competing visions of Mid-Century Modern in California.

All skill levels are invited to experience the tradition of sketching from original works of art in current exhibitions. Museum Teaching Artists provide general guidance and all materials. Each program is open to 10 participants.

Despite their vast importance throughout human history, only about 5% of the world’s oceans have been studied in great detail. Join Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Development Officer Melissa Baffa as she shares stories of her adventures serving as a Lead Science Communication Fellow with the Ocean Exploration Trust, exploring the deep sea alongside pioneering ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard. In 2015 she accompanied Dr. Ballard to the Galapagos Rift Zone during his first trip back to the hydrothermal vents he discovered in 1977. Since then, she has also explored the deep basins and ridges along the Southern California coastline and a seamount off the coast of Monterey. Learn about her past explorations aboard the Nautilus, highlights of the 2019 season, and how you can participate live.

The New Works Lab presents bare bones developmental productions of half-hour scripted and devised plays. The program provides a simple 'fringe festival' level of technical and design support so that each work may evolve in content and structure through the final performance. Works are selected every November through an open application process. The process is supported by a weekly spring quarter class in which NWL student actors, designers, playwrights, directors, stage managers and publicists working on the productions convene with faculty and staff mentors to view and critique staged iterations of each work.

CHIMERA is a science fiction play set in 2050 that centers around a love triangle and an artificially intelligent firefighting cyborg named AICH#805. Entertaining the fate of human existence in an era of climate change, the play discusses technological innovations that move us closer to “the singularity”—the moment when super-intelligent machines evolve without human assistance—as we simultaneously grapple with the more immediate threat of environmental collapse. Our main characters must reconcile the past and save humanity before being expelled from planet Earth.

Writers of all levels are invited to participate in this informal exploration of the Museum's galleries as an impetus to writing. Each session is led by a visiting writer/facilitator who begins with a conversation and prompts, partially inspired by works on view. Participants are free to write on their own and then reconvene as a group to share and comment on each other's work. Please bring a journal or notebook, laptop, or tablet on which to write. Each program is open to 12 participants.

TITLE: A Merger in Space: Black Holes and Neutron Stars
SPEAKER: Prof. Duncan Brown, Physics Dept., Brown University
The first detection of colliding black holes rocked the scientific world, establishing that gravitational waves are REAL and measurable. Scientists have also achieved the first detection of colliding neutron stars. Prof. Brown will discuss the implications of these cosmic mergers, what they create, and how they change our view of the Universe.

By car: Go to the La Cumbre shopping entrance with the stoplight and turn signal. You will see the Panera restaurant when you make the left turn. Do not park in their lot. Either park in the La Cumbre lot or keep going straight till you get to a stop sign. You will have passed Panera, Sees, and other shops. Make a right turn at the stop sign and then another quick right. Go straight ahead and be aware of the two speed bumps. Grace Village is on the left. For those who would like to park in that lot, we can give you a parking permit good for our 4 meetings that you can put on your dashboard.

By bus: Take the State Street bus from downtown and get off at the La Cumbre stop on State Street that has the stoplight. Cross the street and you can see Grace Village on the right. Walk diagonally across the Panera restaurant parking lot. You can enter the main entrance door or the door on the left which leads to the Community Room.That door is locked from the outside, but we can let you in.

To enter the main entrance, walk straight ahead and then make a left turn and walk down the ramp to the Community Room. There is also an entrance to the Community Room from outside on the left side of the building. We will have the Death Cafe flyers on both of these doors.

At Death Cafes people come together in a relaxed and safe setting to discuss death, drink tea and eat delicious cake. It's free. Please join us! And tell a friend...the more the merrier!

Geoff Dyer’s earlier book on film, Zona, was about Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, so it was perhaps inevitable that he should next devote his unique critical and stylistic energies to Brian G. Hutton’s "Where Eagles Dare"—a thrilling 1968 Alpine adventure starring a magnificent, bleary-eyed Richard Burton and a dynamically lethargic Clint Eastwood. "Broadsword Calling Danny Boy" is Dyer’s hilarious tribute to a film that he has loved since childhood, including a scene-by-scene analysis that takes the reader from its snowy, Teutonic opening credits to its vertigo-inducing climax. In this special 50th-anniversary celebration of the movie, Dyer explains why it is indelibly imprinted on his consciousness and that of almost all British males of a certain age. This event includes film clips and, if watches can be synchronized correctly, perfectly matched readings from the book.

Marshall Sharpe is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings, entitled, “American Cotton” at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Glass Box Gallery. The exhibition will be on view from Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, May 31 from 9-5 pm. A reception and a short artist talk will be held on Friday, May 31, from 4-6 pm at the UCSB Glass Box Gallery.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The Glass Box Gallery is located in the center of the UCSB Art Department, Building 534 (Space 1328), near Storke Tower. Paid parking is available in Lot 22.
