Across the Great Divide: A Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of The Band

Each band brings their musical alchemy to the Santa Barbara stage in a celebration of The Band, and 50 years since the legendary group’s debut albums Music From Big Pink and The Band.

The UCSB Department of Music will present a Guest Artist Masterclass led by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 from 1:30-3:30 pm in Karl Geiringer Hall on the UCSB campus. Recognized as "one of America's finest artists and singers" by the New York Times, Ms. von Stade has enriched the world of classical music for four and a half decades with her appearances in opera, concert, and recital. Ms. von Stade will work with mezzo-soprano Kelly Guerra, baritone Byron Mayes, soprano Christy Lee Peterson, and mezzo-soprano Molly Clementz of the UCSB Voice Program. UCSB faculty member Dr. John Ballerino will serve as the collaborative pianist for the class. Admission is free. Seating is first-come, first-served. Reservations are not available.

Leilah Weinraub’s "Shakedown" (2018) chronicles the “high-femme performances” in the Los Angeles-based underground black-lesbian strip club Shakedown. The New Yorker claims that “Shakedown is neither an experimental art film nor an anthropology of gay, black femme performance in L.A. Rather, Weinraub sought to capture a moment and turn it into cinema.” The film chronicles the explicit performances and personal relationships of the party’s dancers and organizers in the early 2000s, revealing that Shakedown was more than a strip club; as one of the few spaces for lesbian subculture, the club brought together and galvanised a community of freaks and queers of color.

Writer/director/producer Leilah Weinraub will join moderator Mireille Miller-Young (Feminist Studies, UCSB) for a post-screening discussion.

The Quatuor Danel has been at the forefront of the European music scene since its founding in 1991, with major concert performances worldwide including Paris, London, and San Francisco. Harbor of Spies: A Novel of Historic Havana is an historical suspense novel set in Cuba at the height of the Civil War. Havana, one of the most important foreign ports for the Confederacy, was then alive with blockade runners, spies and slave traders. The protagonist is a deeply conflicted young man who was kicked out of the Naval Academy in the middle of the Civil War and who goes to Cuba to find a way forward. Bitter, resentful and confused, he travels to Cuba, as the first mate and then captain of a merchant ship, looking for answers about his own life and some trace of his recently deceased mother’s past. As soon as he arrives, he rescues a man from the sea outside Havana harbor who turns out to be a prison escapee. This one act of kindness draws him into dangerous matters beyond his control. He gets ensnared in a mystery about an English diplomat who was murdered years earlier in his home in Havana. This murder of George Backhouse in 1855 was real and was never solved.

Why do so many U.S. scientists continue to lean on the language of apolitical science, even as political leaders display less and less interest in scientists’ claims to expertise, or even the existence of facts? In a new book, Freedom’s Laboratory: The Cold War Struggle for the Soul of Science, historian Audra J. Wolfe suggests

A focus on student actors has often led historians of Japan to dismiss the idea of epochal change in “the long 1968.” This talk adopts the perspective of the older generation of Japanese social scientists to show these years as a watershed in the basis of authoritative knowledge. The existing historiography often presents these scholars as reactionary. I show how they, in concert with their colleagues abroad, actually anticipated and indeed accelerated epistemological revolution.

Born in the two decades from 1900-1920, “transwar” social scientists assumed leadership of their disciplines in the 1930s and maintained intellectual hegemony across the chronological divide of World War II. They were linked by shared demographic characteristics and, more importantly, through a common commitment to objectivity. Transcending the domestic intellectual community, conviction in objectivity drew together a transnational network of scholars able to trust and engage with each other’s work. I show how, during the 1960s, their critiques of the postwar order (that they themselves had built) led to the dethronement of objectivity as the hallmark of epistemological legitimacy, and to their own exit from the universities. I conclude by looking at their younger replacements, who inaugurated subjective, activist, and particularist paradigms of knowledge.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is pleased to announce the opening of its latest exhibit, Rum Running, Sailors & Prohibition. Many of the exhibited items are on loan from the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Additional artifacts and material highlight local rum running in Santa Barbara, one of the busiest places in California during Prohibition. The exhibit tells the story of rum, the part it played in the rich history of sea-going men and its connection to Santa Barbara. Covering more than 400 years, the exhibit illustrates the new world’s first distilled spirit, from its origins on 17th century Caribbean sugar cane plantations to the role of slavery.

At odds with abiding critiques of Hip Hop’s celebration of materialism, misogyny and violence, this talk highlights how religion has long been a centerpiece of the music and culture. Telling the less familiar story of Hip Hop’s religious history, we will cover a range of religious performances from such early artists as KRS-ONE, Tupac and Lauryn Hill up through contemporary figures like Kanye West, Remy Ma, Chance the Rapper, and Kendrick Lamar. Josef Sorett is an Associate Professor of Religion and African-American Studies at Columbia University, where he also directs the Center on African-American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice.

Tyree Daye is a poet from Youngsville, North Carolina. He is the author of two poetry collections: River Hymns, 2017 APR/Honickman First Book Prize winner, and Cardinal, forthcoming from Copper Canyon Press, 2020. Daye is a 2017 Ruth Lilly Finalist and Cave Canem fellow. Daye’s work has been published in Prairie Schooner, The New York Times, and Nashville Review. Daye won the 2019 Palm Beach Poetry Festival Langston Hughes Fellowship and is a 2019 Kate Tufts Finalist. Daye most recently was awarded a 2019 Whiting Award.

Beginning in the late 1960s, the contemporary art world was increasingly shaped by how its members engaged with the law. From contract-like conceptual artworks to confrontations with police and courts, artists like Suzanne Lacy, Ann Messner, David Hammons, Dennis Oppenheim, and Tehching Hsieh interacted with various facets of the law as an integral part of their creative process. Yet rather than focus on what art has done to law, contemporary artists produced works that raised pointed questions for lawyers, judges and for anyone interested in the legal institution.

Every year, the HOPE Awards gives us an opportunity to honor our local heroes of public education. This year we will shine our light on individuals and programs making strides for literacy. The evening will begin with a silent auction and reception featuring fine food and beverages from local restaurants, wineries, and breweries at the beautiful Santa Barbara Historical Museum. This year, we will honor Paul Orfalea and Kate Parker, as well as celebrate the work of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation.

This talk explores bilingual women’s social and narrative positioning as informal linguistic brokers (or community interpreters) in a rural town dependent on the industrial processing of fresh kosher meat-products. Specifically, it addresses how these women as “community accountants” employed reflexive interdiscursivity and oriented to different modernist chronotopes to re-analyze the cultural politics of migrant labor (Bakhtin 1981; See Chávez 2015; Dick 2010, 2017; Perrino 2011; Reynolds 2017). Their accounts shed insight into what happens when legal recognition of migrant labor is withheld/deferred and how this influences the chronic conditions of exhaustion and ambivalence that shape the social reproductive and linguistic labor necessary in supporting a diverse international migrant workforce in transnationally intertwined rural political economies (Povinelli 2011; McElhinny 2016). The study combines ethnography with poetic approaches to narrative dialogically produced through interviews. Analyses feature two contrasting case studies of native and foreign-born women and highlight how they grappled with maintaining and sustaining relationships that were socially fraught and required different kinds of border-crossing work to affectively identify with both migrant and native-born town residents.

Jennifer F. Reynolds is Professor of Anthropology and a faculty member in Linguistics and the Latin American Studies Program at the University of South Carolina. She is a linguistic anthropologist who examines the relationship(s) between quotidian discourse practices and social and linguistic reproduction, with a focus on indigenous Guatemalans in transnational circuits of migration.

More and more people are becoming aware of plastics gyres and microplastics in the oceans, cities around the world are banning plastic bags and straws, and China has stopped accepting most of the world’s plastic for recycling. Scientists, policy-makers, municipalities, industries, and countries are struggling with the positive and negative implications of plastic. Topics include interdependencies and challenges in the life cycle of plastics, from design of materials, to uses, down- and up-recycling, energy and cost trade-offs, to pollution and ocean microplastics, sustainability, and communicating the issues. This event brings together experts from universities (administrators, science/social science/humanities professors), government, non-profit agencies, and industry, and presents a fascinating and troubling film, to discuss a variety of timely questions.
