Lyon Opera Ballet

France’s world-renowned Lyon Opera Ballet performs the West Coast premiere of its acclaimed Trois Grandes Fugues, a revolutionary program featuring three responses to Beethoven’s beloved masterpiece “Grosse Fuge” by three major female choreographers – France’s rebellious Maguy Marin, America’s meticulous Lucinda Childs and Belgium’s hypnotic Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The acclaimed 35-member company is known for its exceptionally ambitious and diverse repertory, showcasing a stunningly broad range of choreographers, from Merce Cunningham to William Forsythe. With this “simple yet audacious idea” (The New York Times), the company highlights different interpretations of choreography, movement and musicality, performed to the fullest by an extraordinary cast of dancers.
“In Trois Grandes Fugues, the 35-member company brings together a magisterial trio of choreographers… With each of their highly individual settings we hear, see and feel Beethoven’s fugue in fabulously new ways.” The Guardian (U.K.)

Yefim Bronfman and the New York Philharmonic String Quartet

A dedicated chamber musician in addition to his solo career, “Bronfman is a pianist with comprehensive skills who can seemingly play anything” (The New York Times). This exquisite concert sees Bronfman performing with the New York Philharmonic String Quartet, the orchestra’s principal string players. Their radiant program includes Schumann’s sparkling, exuberant Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, the first piano quintet of the Romantic era, which served as the inspiration for Brahms’ own quintet.

Lovely Villa and Vertical City (Film Screening)

‘Lovely Villa’ is the name of the apartment building in which the filmmaker grew up as he studied to become an architect. This housing project represents an imagination of the ideal community for a modern India. The film explores the architecture of the colony through a personal narrative. ‘Vertical City’ lets the viewer experience the living conditions of places hidden away in a 21st century metropolis. In a far suburb of Bombay, residents from slums are moved into high-rise apartment complexes with the promise of a better life. While these complexes are built to house the poor, they have also been seen as moves to free slum land in prime city areas for commercial development. Post film discussion with the filmmaker, Avijit Mukul, a Mumbai-based documentary filmmaker to follow. 32m & 34m
