In New York City, LGBTQ youth-of-color gather out on the Christopher Street Pier, practicing a performance-based artform, Ballroom. This form of expression was made famous in the early 1990s by Madonna’s music video “Vogue” and the documentary “Paris Is Burning.” Twenty-five years after these cultural touchstones, a new and very different generation of LGBTQ youth have formed an artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene. KIKI follows seven characters from the Kiki community over the course of four years, using their preparations and spectacular performances at events known as Kiki balls as a framing device while delving into their battles with homelessness, illness, and prejudice, as well as their gains towards political influence and the conquering of affirming gender-expressions. A multimedia theatrical collaboration between celebrated violinist Jennifer Koh and composer Jean-Baptiste Barrière, The 38th Parallel is named after the line of latitude separating North and South Korea, an arbitrary divide of invisible borders that has transformed the lives of generations. The work incorporates the concept of pansori – a Korean genre of musical storytelling that combines music, visual art and movement – to recount a very personal story of the impact of immigration on three generations and two families. Conceptualized by the highly collaborative Koh, this work draws upon a cast of notable talents to create a revealing and deeply intimate portrait of identity and displacement.

Nearly 60 years ago, on June 7, 1960, the Marie, a converted WWII Landing craft set out at sunrise from Santa Barbara Harbor with seven men working on a covert underwater Raytheon-related project…and was never seen again. Eventually, four victims’ bodies were recovered, but three disappeared along with the Marie’s life boat—the captain, a scientist, and an engineer (Diego “Jim” Terres, Jr). Only 2 years old when her father disappeared, Teresa Newton-Terres decided to investigate the story and try to solve the mystery of the Marie’s disappearance. Unanswered questions led her into a search for information and she heard first-hand accounts, uncovering an untold Cold War mystery which she will discuss in her presentation

With lively, rhythmic hand-clapping and drumming, joyous melodies, inspirational poetry and powerful call-and-response vocals, their mesmerizing performances include songs ranging from 13th-century mystical Persian poems to more recent Punjabi poems that speak of the intoxication of divine love.
