The UC Santa Barbara Department of Music will present pianist and Professor Paul Berkowitz in recital on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 7:30 pm in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall on the UC Santa Barbara campus. In this recital, Mr. Berkowitz will return to the repertoire for which he is best known and acclaimed, Schubert and Brahms, in works he has not performed in Santa Barbara for over 20 years, Brahms’ Klavierstücke, Op. 119 and Schubert’s Sonata in A minor, D845 (Op. 42). These milestone works of Schubert and Brahms will be accompanied by J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 5 in G Major, as well as an assortment of works by Francis Poulenc.

Although they both had been playing individually for years, Tom and Kenny met and began making music together 40 years ago when guesting on local radio KCSB. After they had played a song, the station received a phone call offering them $15 and a pizza to come to play at the Sojourner. They accepted – but only after holding out for free beer. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Flying Fish/Rounder recording artists have now been playing their unique blend of guitar and harmonica blues, rags, and good time music to widely diverse audiences for 40 years. Their live performances include concerts, clubs, and festivals all over the world.

Together and separately they have worked on countless film scores, TV soundtracks, commercials, and sessions. They’ve appeared on television internationally, have played for audiences of 300 million via Voice of America and are frequent guests of National Public Radio. Between them, they have issued 14 CDs, 12 instructional books and several DVDs. In addition to working with Kenny, Tom has played on over 260 CDs… and Kenny was recently honored by Martin Guitars with his own Signature Model 000-18KS. Any musical act that can stick together 40 years is worth celebrating – but especially one that was born and nurtured here in Santa Barbara. In their long career, the boys have played every venue in town – from the smallest dive bar to the County Bowl – but our own Lobero Theater has always been their favorite. Come join the party!

The Art From Scrap CreatorLab comes alive with a themed workshop every Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Filled with hundreds of reuse materials, our CreatorLab is sure to ignite your imagination! Children 6 years and up can stay and have fun while their parents go shopping at the Saturday Farmer’s Market – just one block away. Workshops are taught by visiting Guest Artists and AFS Staff Members. This is a perfect way to spend a morning – for artists of all ages and abilities. Cost: $8.00 per person
