The exhibition Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources reconnects this iconic artist to his 19th-century context and invites us to consider the artists, musicians, and writers he admired. In a 21st-century riff on the “non- anxiety of influence,” writers Sameer Pandya and Andrew Winer play a similar connection game with artists of our time and explore the passions that emerge when creators fall under the influence of art forms other than the one they practice.
This talk is the first in a series of three related Parallel Stories exploring connections between art forms, allowing us to see those influences at work in the process of composition, the performance of music, and the poetry of narrative from the 19th century to the present day.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM)’s newest permanent exhibit, opening to the public on Thursday, April 14, 2022, shows visitors how whales help maintain the stability and health of the ocean and help minimize the impact of climate change. The Whales Are Superheroes! exhibit focuses on whale diversity in the Santa Barbara Channel, climate connections and the role whales play in climate change. Taking its aesthetic inspiration from comics and graphic novels, the exhibit incorporates text panels and drone footage to illustrate how whales are helping to save the environment. Whales Are Superheroes! is also part of a countywide alliance of museums, the Santa Barbara Zoo, and the Botanic Gardens to present programming addressing climate change (https://www.sbmuseumsalliance.org/).

Don’t miss the fun and excitement of whales!
Whales help maintain the stability and health of the ocean and minimize some of the worst impacts of climate change. This April, Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is opening Whales Are Superheroes! — a collection of exciting exhibits and programs that explore the many wonders of whales. To kick off the opening of all these events, SBMM has planned an unusual month-long immersive experience, "A Whale of a Tale,” on display from Thursday, April 14 through Sunday, May 15, 2022. And the fun is free with museum admission!
As part of its multi-faceted celebration of whales this spring and summer, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum announces the April 14 opening of its newest art exhibit, The Wonder of Whales: Two Artists’ Perspectives, which features whale paintings by two local artists, John Baran and Kelly Clause. Thanks to the generous support of Chevron, Dreier Family, Emmett Foundation, Mimi Michaelis, Hank and Mari Mitchel, June G. Outhwaite Foundation, and Wood-Claeyssens Foundation, the exhibit will be open to the public from April 14-July 31, 2022. Although their subjects are often similar, each artist brings his or her unique perspective, technique, style, and medium to the work in this exhibit.
In November and December 2021, Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) staff worked with students from Laguna Blanca Middle School, Peabody Charter, Santa Barbara Charter, and Santa Ynez Elementary School to teach them about the importance of whales to the environment and to create whale-inspired artwork to coincide with the museum’s newest exhibit, Whales Are Superheroes! The result of those efforts is on display in SBMM’s new student art exhibit, Whales are Superheroes! Saving the Planet One CO2 Molecule at a Time, opening on April 14, 2022, and on display through July 31, 2022.
