Brazilian songstress Lúcia Menezes & acclaimed flutist, singer, and composer Rebecca Kleinmann will perform traditional Northern Brazilian popular music, traversing Forró, frevo, and other rhythms.

UCSB Department of Music presents Montage

The UC Santa Barbara Department of Music will present “Montage” on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 7 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Santa Barbara. Curated by UCSB Professor of Flute Jill Felber, the department’s fifth annual showcase concert will feature back-to-back performances by outstanding faculty, students, and alumni from the UCSB Department of Music. Faculty artists include soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian, tenor Benjamin Brecher, violinist Ertan Torgul, violist Jonathan Moerschel, cellist Jennifer Kloetzel, and pianists John Ballerino, Natasha Kislenko, and Robert Koenig. Tabla player Shashank Aswathanarayana, members of Jennifer Kloetzel’s cello studio, and the UCSB Young Artists String Quartet will round out the roster of student performers. Additionally, UCSB alumni from the Department of Music’s Resident Ensemble, the Now Hear Ensemble, will present excerpts from a work by UCSB Composition alumnus Federico Llach. Admission is FREE (no reservation required).

UCSB Faculty Carillon Recital: Wesley Arai

UCSB University Carillonist Wesley Arai will present a recital from the carillon in UCSB's Storke Tower on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 11 am-12 pm. Listeners are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on the grass outside the tower during the recital. This special event will commemorate Veteran's Day and Armistice Day, and will be part of a worldwide celebration where bells will be rung to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Mr. Arai will perform a piece by Geert D'hollander written specifically for the occasion, which carillonneurs around the world will be playing for the first time on the same day. The recital will also include patriotic music and songs promoting peace.

21st Annual Santa Barbara Empty Bowls

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County hosts the 21st Annual Santa Barbara Empty Bowls luncheon to raise funds to transform hunger into health by providing fresh produce, healthy groceries and nutrition education for those facing hunger in our area. Tickets are available for the 12 noon and 1pm seatings. $30 admission includes a ceramic bowl of your choice hand made by local artists, gourmet soup served by local leaders and luminaries, fresh bread, a Foodbank warehouse tour, complimentary cookies and coffee, and the company of 1,000 guests with the shared goal of ending hunger in Santa Barbara County. All the feels.

Ramenfest

On Sunday, Nov. 11th from 12pm-3pm, Santa Barbara’s top restaurant teams will come together to put forth their best ramen recipes. This friendly competition will offer a taste of a variety of ramen, from the traditional to the unique, for the public’s “Ramen King of Santa Barbara” vote. If things couldn’t get any better, DJ Darla Bea will be setting the vibe, while Southern Wines & Spirits will be sampling Japanese sake and whiskey, and Draughtsmen Aleworks will have pouring special Ramenfest brew.

Science Pub: The Ocean is Boiling: Lessons Learned and Forgotten Since the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill

In 1969, crude oil and gas erupted from a platform off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. Alarm over the disaster reverberated around the world, energizing the nascent environmental movement and leading to a slew of legislative changes. Ultimately, the spill imbued environmentalism with the kind of fervor that had already galvanized the push for women’s equality, civil rights, and peace in Southeast Asia. Kate Wheeling and Max Ufberg will explore the 1969 oil spill in its entirety, focusing primarily on the community's response and the environmental legislation that followed the disaster.
