Armchair Travels Lecture

Palmyra, in the heart of the Syrian Desert, was a rich trading center in Antiquity on the Silk Route between the Mediterranean and Central Asia. The city became a unique meeting place between the cultures of the Graeco-Roman world and the East. Art historian Nigel McGilchrist first visited Palmyra in 1978, and on two further occasions in the 1980s and 1990s. Now, much of what Nigel saw then has been devastatingly destroyed in the Syrian War and is lost to us forever. Nigel has slides, though, that he will share on a “trip” to Palmyra during one of SBMA Travel’s popular Armchair Travel lectures.

Electric Hot Tuna

The name Hot Tuna invokes as many different moods and reactions as there are Hot Tuna fans — millions of them. To some, Hot Tuna is a reminder of some wild and happy times. To others, that name will forever be linked to their own discovery of the power and depth of American blues and roots music. To newer fans, Hot Tuna is a tight, masterful duo that is on the cutting edge of great music.

All of those things are correct, and more. For more than four decades, Hot Tuna has played, toured, and recorded some of the best and most memorable acoustic and electric music ever. And Hot Tuna is still going strong — some would say stronger than ever.

For Americana godfather David Bromberg, it all began with the blues.

Bromberg’s incredible journey spans five-and-a-half decades, and includes – but is not limited to – adventures with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, and music and life lessons from seminal blues guitarist Reverend Gary Davis, who claimed the young Bromberg as a son. A musician’s musician, Bromberg’s mastery of several stringed instruments (guitar, fiddle, Dobro, mandolin), and multiple styles is legendary, leading Dr. John to declare him an American icon. In producing John Hartford’s hugely influential Aereo-Plain LP, Bromberg even co-invented a genre: Newgrass.
