Springtime in France: Music of Les Six

The UC Santa Barbara Department of Music will present a virtual chamber music recital, “Springtime in France: Music of Les Six,” on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 6 pm PDT as a YouTube Premiere via the Department of Music’s YouTube channel. The concert will feature UC Santa Barbara faculty member and pianist Dr. Natasha Kislenko and special guests, including clarinetist Richie Hawley, trumpeter Matthew Swihart, violinist Chavdar Parashkevov, and pianist Tali Morgulis. The program will include solo and chamber works by the members of Les Six—Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, Darius Milhaud, Germaine Tailleferre, Francis Poulenc, and Louis Durey.

Graduate Student Lecture Recital: Naomi Merer, Soprano

Graduate vocalist Naomi Merer (soprano) will present a virtual Doctor of Musical Arts lecture recital, titled "Get thee to an asylum: reflecting on the evolution of mental illness and its portrayal in Thomas’s operatic mad scene," with pianist Mandee Madrid Sikich on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 4 pm PDT as a YouTube Premiere via the Department of Music’s YouTube channel. Merer will perform excerpts from Songs and Sonnets to Ophelia by Jake Heggie and Hamlet by Charles Ambroise Thomas. Merer is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate.

The Laguna Blanca School Running for Charity is hosting a virtual "May Flowers 5K" race on May 8th to benefit the animals in care at Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network.

 

Land Trust Treks: Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve

Join us for a Mothers Day hike with scenic views of mountains and ocean while learning about how the Land Trust for SB County worked to save this stretch of coastline from development. You will also learn about the botanicals that are endemic to this coastal habitat. This 3 mile, moderate hike is mostly flat, but has some elevation so walking poles optional. Wear good walking shoes, a hat, and layered clothing. Bring sunscreen, water, snacks, and a camera and binoculars if you like. Ample parking, no fee. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are allowed, but must be on leash.

Memorias de Oro: Music, Memory, and Mexicanidad in Pixar’s Coco (2017)

As part of the UC Santa Barbara Music History and Theory Forum, Dr. Jacqueline Avila (University of Tennessee) will give a lecture, titled "Memorias de Oro: Music, Memory, and Mexicanidad in Pixar’s Coco (2017)," on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 3:30pm PDT via Zoom.
