Studio Sunday

Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in this hands-on informal workshop with SBMA Teaching Artists. Each month explore a different medium—clay, metal, ink, wood, photography, paper—inspired by works of art in the Museum’s collection or special exhibitions. In September, sculpt your favorite animal in air-dry clay, then add color with a watercolor wash inspired by Viola Frey’s "Homage to Dubuffet" (1977–1980).

Perla Batalla presented by Viva el Arte

Sunday, September 10 | 6 PM | The Marjorie Luke Theatre, 721 E Cota St, Santa Barbara

Ventura-based singer Perla Batalla brings a lifetime of experience traversing musical borders to her passionate programs of traditional and contemporary Latin American music. Her dad, a Mexican mariachi and DJ, and her Argentine mom ran “Discoteca Batalla,” a Los Angeles record shop where Batalla was exposed non-stop to music that cut across genres and languages.

In this concert she will express her love for her mestiza identity and the hybrid musical culture in which she was raised. Expect to hear Spanish-language favorites rendered with contagious rhythm and pure joy.

The Power to Be: A Lecture by Anthony Sonnenberg

Artist Anthony Sonnenberg will explore expressions of power through decoration within various cultures. Opposing a denigrative association with the merely frivolous, decoration throughout history has performed a meaningful task of constructing and emanating power. Personal, social, and political power dynamics are expressed through decorative decadence and excess, be it, the over-embellished palace, the ecstatic candelabra, or the glamorous dress.

The artist’s work will be featured in the SBMA exhibition WARES! Extraordinary Ceramics and the Ordinary Home from June 18 through September 17, 2023.
