Sunni Patterson captures sunlight and radiates it in her being, in her words, and in her action. Her words capture a culture, unite people, and shed light on issues some would find uncomfortable or un-newsworthy. Most of all, she is enlightening and speaks her truth, giving other women the power and strength to do so as well. She is "a Black woman warrior poet doing work - to ask you, are you doing yours?".

Screening of the 2017 documentary Far From the Tree on May 8th from 7-9pm

Undergraduate cellist Thomas Lin will present a recital with pianist Jared Eben on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 7:30 pm in Karl Geiringer Hall in the Music Building. The program will include works by Bach, Beethoven, and Dvořák. Mr. Lin is a student of UCSB faculty member Jennifer Kloetzel.

Indy award-winning choreographer and artistic director, Christopher Pilafian brings Santa Barbara Dance Theater back to the Lobero Theatre for a dynamic program of new dances and audience favorites from past seasons. As part of the World Music Series, virtuosos Wes Corbett (banjo) and Simon Chrisman (hammer dulcimer) will present a concert of original and traditional tunes and songs on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 12 pm in the UCSB Music Bowl. Having made two records with the chamber bluegrass outfit, the Bee Eaters, they’re releasing their first duo recording 16 years after their first meeting. The World Music Series is co-presented by the UCSB MultiCultural Center and the Ethnomusicology Program in the Department of Music.

What is Mid-Century Modern?: The Architecture of Richard Neutra and The Eameses

The words “Mid-Century Modern” are everywhere. From Crate & Barrel to Craigslist, Sotheby’s to Walmart, Mid-Century Modern or MCM is the sought-after style for life today. What is it about kidney-shaped pools and steel beams, polished concrete and plate glass, womb chairs, and spider legs that continues to fascinate after all these years? Looking at the works of Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames this talk will explore the competing visions of Mid-Century Modern in California.

All skill levels are invited to experience the tradition of sketching from original works of art in current exhibitions. Museum Teaching Artists provide general guidance and all materials. Each program is open to 10 participants.

Despite their vast importance throughout human history, only about 5% of the world’s oceans have been studied in great detail. Join Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Development Officer Melissa Baffa as she shares stories of her adventures serving as a Lead Science Communication Fellow with the Ocean Exploration Trust, exploring the deep sea alongside pioneering ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard. In 2015 she accompanied Dr. Ballard to the Galapagos Rift Zone during his first trip back to the hydrothermal vents he discovered in 1977. Since then, she has also explored the deep basins and ridges along the Southern California coastline and a seamount off the coast of Monterey.
