20th State Street Mile

The 20th State Street Mile, a unique community event, features a fast, gradual downhill, point-to-point downtown course with something for everyone & every dog who runs, walks or jogs. Events include eight (8) age group categories, YMCA Family Fun Mile, a Dog Mile and elite Masters & Open Mile races for the serious, competitive runner.

The Open prize purse totals $5000 and goes 4-deep per gender ($1000, $750, $500 and $250) plus $1000 Open course record bonus, winner-only (3:49 men / 4:22 women) and $100 Masters-only course record winner bonus (4:12 men / 4:57 women).

20th Anniversary State Street Mile Super Bonus presented by HOKA ONE ONE & InTouch Health
For 2019, we are offering a $10,000 Super Bonus for the first elite finisher, man or woman, who runs faster than the following standards: 3:47.00 (men) and 4:17.00 (women). The bonus will be split 50/50 if both gender winners break the aforementioned time standards. If the Super Bonus is achieved, the $1000 event record bonus will also be awarded.

The State Street Mile is also a local SBAA Grand Prix and Junior Grand Prix Series event.

The race starts at Pedregosa & State Streets and finishes at State & De La Guerra Streets. The first heat starts at 8:00am.

All proceeds go directly to the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program’s Crime Victim Emergency Fund.

Guinness World Record Attempt: Largest Backwards Walk

On June 2nd, the whole community is invited to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the State Street Mile and to have a lot of fun by participating in an officially sanctioned Guinness World Record attempt for the “Largest Backwards Walk.” 

UCSB Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Players

The UCSB Chamber Orchestra will present an evening of orchestral masterpieces on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 7:30 pm in UCSB's Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. Winners of the quarterly UCSB Chamber Music Competition will perform as the UCSB Chamber Players.

Summer Carillon Recital: Leslie Chan, UC Berkeley

As part of the Fiftieth Anniversary Carillon Recital Series, Leslie Chan (Associate Carillonist, UC Berkeley) will present a recital from the carillon in UCSB's Storke Tower on Sunday, August 4th at 2 pm. Listeners are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on the grass outside the tower during the recital.

Sonic Governance: Criminalization and Culturalization of Funk Carioca in Rio de Janeiro

Alexandra Lippman (UCLA) will present a talk titled "Sonic Governance: Criminalization and Culturalization of Funk Carioca in Rio de Janeiro," on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 3:30-5 pm in Music Room 1145. The talk will be followed by an end-of-year party and live DJ set by Dr. Lippman (aka Xandão) in the Music Bowl. Cosponsored by the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Music (CISM), Ethnomusicology Forum, and Music History and Theory Forum.

Graduate Student Recital: Brandon J. Rolle, Composition

Graduate student Brandon J. Rolle will present a PhD Music Composition Lecture Recital on Wednesday, June 5th at 6:30 pm in Room 1145 in the Music Building. This Lecture Recital will be a presentation of Rolle's research, approach, and techniques of composition, demonstrated by a number of live performances, including works for string quartet (Kristina Tsanova, Catherine Patton, Jordan Warmath, Thomas Lin), piano and electronics (Marc Evans), and viola and live electronics (Jordan Warmath, Brandon Rolle). Examples from Rolle's fixed-media and multimedia works will be shown, as well, including excerpts from his audio-video collaboration with Christopher Richmond, Hyperway. The event will last one hour.

Begonias: Novel Grown and New Introductions from Australia

Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society. Begonia expert Mike Flaherty will show novel ways of growing begonias, new Australian begonia hybrids that he has introduced to the United States, and other interesting specimens, including tuberous and upright jointed begonias.
